About the Author

Jonathan Alexander is Professor of English and Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of California, Irvine, USA. His books include Finding Out: An Introduction to LGBT Studies (2008, with Deborah Meem and Michelle Gibson) and Literacy, Sexuality and Pedagogy: Theory and Practice for Composition Studies (2008).

Serena Anderlini-D'Onofrio is a scholar, writer, activist, teacher, and cultural theorist. Her book of ecosexual theory, Gaia and the New Politics of Love is a 2010 Nautilus Winner. She is editor of BiTopia (2011, with Brian Zamboni), Bisexuality and Queer Theory (2010, with Jonathan Alexander), Plural Loves: Designs for Bi and Poly Living (2005), and Women and Bisexuality: A Global Perspective (2003). Her memoir, Eros: A Journey of Multiple Loves, was a 2007 Lambda finalist. She is Professor of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez.

Good book. The first person to write a book on this subject?

This 1901 book by Bernarr MacFadden may be the first or one of the first Natural Eyesight Improvement books.

Good book, much beneficial training. I like the poetry and how he describes emotions, thoughts, communication transferred by the eyes alone. How experienced police officers obtain the ability to detect a criminal personality by a certain look all of them have in their eyes.

Some areas of the book needed improvement. This is NOT Bernarr's fault. It is the fault of the medical, optical profession who hid the true function of the eyes, vision and natural cures without glasses.

Some things in the book I do not recommend applying but the book is a must have addition to the natural eyesight improvement collection. Way back in 1901 natural health teachers knew that eyeglasses caused addiction to stronger and stronger prescriptions, more vision impairment, eye disease.

In later years Mr. MacFadden wrote a new book with many changes, improvements;

The 1918, 1924-1925 book editions of 'STRENGTHENING THE EYES - A New Course in Scientific Eye Training in 28 Lessons' is a result of Bernarr MacFadden meeting and studying Ophthalmologist William H. Bates practice of Natural Eyesight Improvement. They advertised natural eyesight training, The Bates Method together in newspapers, magazines.
Dr. Bates name was on the 1918-, possibly 1925 book as author with MacFadden. Later book editions were authored only by MacFadden. Did Dr. Bates want to change some of the practices in the book? (Modern teachers have changed, corrected, added some practices) Or maybe he preferred to place all his attention on his solo projects; book, magazine, medical papers, clinic work.

Bernarr MacFadden was one of the first Natural Health, Physical Fitness teachers. Sadly, he died in 1955 from a urinary tract infection after refusing standard medical doctor's treatment.

MacFadden published Physical Culture Magazine; A fitness, natural health, food, body building magazine. In this magazine and other newspapers... Ophthalmologist William H. Bates and Bernarr MacFadden advertised their 'Strengthening the Eyes' course and book. This seems to have started the Natural Eyesight (Vision) Improvement revolution.

Many people have improved their vision with the Bates Method. It is hidden by the medical community due to its success, competition; prevents the need for eyeglasses, surgery, lasik... drugs.

(The Bates Method works if the patient will take the time to learn and apply it. A large portion of the population seem to prefer eyeglasses or surgery; a quick fix with no work, no study. But glasses, contacts, surgery are addictive, maintain and increase eye-vision problems, cataract, detached retina, glaucoma... Only a few honest eye doctors will tell you this truth.)

Missed for a long time - now available again!

This classic, now available in an updated edition, has been missed on the market for a long time. At the Royal Danish School of Educational Studies, we use it as an exemplary introduction to a field of higher mathematics which is more alive than anytime, and which can still be read with very modest prerequisites (complex numbers and rigorous calculus). It covers abstract vector spaces, inner product spaces, and - of course - the basics of Hilbert space theory and operators on Hilbert Space. The text is very well suited for beginners, with ample explanations and many exercises (most of them easy, but some are quite challenging for students having their first encounter with abstract mathematics).

Excellent Introduction to Hilbert Spaces!

Berberian has about eight or so key examples that he uses throughout the book, and he uses them in a tactical way to introduce each new concept. Before you even realize it, you'll have a functional understanding of Hilbert spaces. I'd recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning about them. An understanding of some of the basic concepts of analysis and a familiarity with vector spaces is helpful.

Coins of the Persian satrapies only rarely depicted fortifications in conjunction with traditional Persian emblems of royalty, power, and shrines of the chief deities in the minting city. The Roman use of the iconography of building was fundamentally different. From the first occurrence in 135 BC through the late Roman Empire, the architectural images on coins from Rome commemorated or politicized the monument in question. By the mid-first century BC and into the Imperial period, architecture had become commonplace in the repertoire of Roman coin iconography. Representation of monuments is one of the most beloved (and belabored) topics in studies of Roman coin iconography. It is also a theme in dire need of re-exploration. This comprehensive and chronological approach to architectural coin types conveys the complexity of the subject and underscores how the designs were symptomatic of, and sensitive to, the underlying social, cultural and historical trends that affected both Roman art and Roman society at large.

About the Author
A. A. Milne was an English novelist and playwright born in 1882. A student of H. G. Wells during public school, Milne went on to study mathematics in Cambridge. During his time there, Milne frequently contributed to the college s student magazine, Granta, and was so successful that he was offered a job at the British humour magazine Punch. Milne s son, Christopher Robin, was born in 1920. After writing a poem for him entitled Teddy Bear, Milne began publishing children s stories about Christopher Robin and his stuffed animals, including his bear, Winnie-the-Pooh. Milne s children s books, Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, have since become beloved classics that have been adapted into the famous Disney franchise. Milne died in 1956 at the age of 74.

Vintage British humor

This appears to be a collection of magazine or newspaper columns written around 1912. So if you enjoy dated, "veddy British" humor,it's a pleasant read. The style is similar to some of Agatha Christie's early mysteries; perhaps she enjoyed Milne's writing as well. If you enjoyed the original Pooh stories and haven't been poisoned by Disneyfication, you'll like the gentle satire.

By drawing on prototypical scenes from horror films and thrillers like Rosemary’s Baby, The Silence of the Lambs, Seven and The Blair Witch Project, Hanich identifies five types of fear at the movies and thus provides a much more nuanced classification than previously at hand in film studies. His descriptions of how the five types of fear differ according to their bodily, temporal and social experience inside the auditorium entail a forceful plea for relying more strongly on phenomenology in the study of cinematic emotions. In so doing, this book opens up new ways of dealing with these emotions. Hanich’s study does not stop at the level of fear in the movie theater, however, but puts the strong cinematic emotion against the backdrop of some of the most crucial developments of our modern world: disembodiment, acceleration and the loosening of social bonds. Hanich argues that the strong affective, temporal, and social experiences of frightening movies can be particularly pleasurable precisely because they help to counterbalance these ambivalent changes of modernity.

About the Author

Julian Hanich teaches film and media studies, currently working at the interdisciplinary research center "Languages of Emotion" of the Free University Berlin. His articles have appeared in The New Review of Film and Television Studies, Jump Cut and Film-Philosophy. In his research he focuses on cinematic emotions and affects, the viewer's imagination, film and phenomenology, the collective viewing experience as well as genre studies (melodrama, pornography, comedy, heist movies). He is also a film critic for the Berlin-based daily Der Tagesspiegel.
