Featured Recipe from The New Persian Kitchen: Turmeric Chicken with Sumac and Lime Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 bone-in chicken thighs
  • 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 juicy limes, halved
  • Sumac, for garnish
Directions

In a small bowl, mix the turmeric with 1 tablespoon salt and 2 teaspoons pepper. Place the chicken on a rimmed baking sheet and sprinkle with the spice mixture, turning to coat both sides.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil. Brown the chicken well on both sides, about 7 minutes per side. Pour in the water, then add the garlic, stirring it into the water. Bring the water to a boil, then turn down the heat to low and cover. Braise the chicken for 25 minutes, until the inside is opaque. Transfer the chicken to a serving platter, turn up the heat to high, and reduce the cooking liquid for a few minutes, stirring occasionally until it’s slightly thickened. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and pour the sauce over the chicken.

Dust the chicken with sumac and pepper, garnish with lime halves, and serve.

Featured Recipe from The New Persian Kitchen: Saffron Corn Soup Ingredients
  • 3 tablespoons grapeseed oil
  • 2 yellow onions, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 6 large ears corn, shucked
  • 3 dried limes, soaked in hot water to cover for 15 minutes
  • 6 cups chicken stock or water
  • 1/2 teaspoon saffron, ground and steeped in 1 tablespoon hot water
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
Directions

Heat the oil in a stockpot over medium heat and cook the onions for about 10 minutes, until they start to brown. Add the turmeric and corn. Pierce the limes with a knife or fork and add them to the pot along with their soaking water. Add the stock and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes, until the corn is just tender.

Squeeze the limes against the side of the pot with a long spoon to extract their concentrated flavor before removing them from the soup. Blend half of the soup in a blender, then return it to the pot. Add the saffron and season to taste with salt and pepper. Add lemon juice to taste, and serve.

Every once in a while I pick up a cookbook and want to cook everything in it, which was the case with this one.
—Martha Rose Shulman, The New York Times

“Louisa does a beautiful job of weaving the traditional Persian culinary palette into something of her own. She takes fantastical ingredients—rose water, pomegranates, sumac, and saffron—and spins them into an inspired and unique collection of recipes that are fresh, bright, and brilliantly full of flavor.”
—Heidi Swanson, author of Super Natural Every Day

“This is a highly evocative book telling the story of the marvelous cuisine of Iran, one of my favorites and one that has yet to be properly discovered in the West.”
—Yotam Ottolenghi, coauthor of Jerusalem

“The New Persian Kitchen is the perfect introduction to Persian cooking, full of classic ingredients and not-so-traditional ones, like tofu and quinoa. This book has something for everyone: practical recipes, anecdotes about the culture and history of Iran, and beautiful photography.”
—Firoozeh Dumas, author of Funny in Farsi

A great introduction to Persian cuisine
By Eyria
I borrowed this book from my local library and found it so interesting that I went on a two-week binge of Persian cooking! Needless to say, I have now purchased my own copy of the book.

This book is a great introduction to Persian cuisine, which is new to me and probably to most Americans. Shafia starts off by discussing the history of the cuisine and its unique ingredients. The Persian cuisine, as described by her, is sort of fantastically healthy. Typical recipes include many vegetables, herbs, nuts, fruits, and yogurt. Most dishes contain very little added fat, just a few tablespoons of oil for cooking. Meat is eaten, but is not the main focus, and cheese is not featured much either. As a result, the finished dishes are light, yet flavorful, complex, and satisfying.

I've tried about 10 recipes so far, and all have been very good. The Chicken Kebabs in Yogurt Marinade is a classic Persian recipe, according to the author, and very tasty. The Turmeric Chicken with Sumac and Lime is quite easy to make and full of flavor. The Tomato and Cucumber Salad is reminiscent of the mixed chopped vegetable salads in most Mediterranean cuisines, but adds a unique Persian twist with lime and dried mint. Some of my favorite recipes so far are the delicious Persian rice dishes, which to me scale the heights of rice cookery. Her Sweet Rice with Carrots & Nuts is exotic and delicate; and I feel like I could happily eat Rice with Favas & Dill at least every other week. The recipes are very healthy to start with, and Shafia adds a further dimension by offering recipe variations substituting vegetables, tofu, or tempeh for meat, and whole grains for white grains. I really like her attention to health issues and flexibility in using new ingredients. Usually in books on ethnic cuisines, the author focuses only on ingredients traditional to that cuisine, so Shafia's approach is quite different.

The book has been gorgeously produced by Ten Speed Press. Its lay-flat binding, matte paper, and attractive typesetting make it very easy to read and use in the kitchen. And the photographs could not possibly be more enticing! The photo of the Sweet & Smoky Beet Burgers was so gorgeous that I had to try the recipe even though a) I don't love beets and b) I'd never had a single veggie burger in my life before. (And of course they turned out to be very good--even my carnivorish husband liked them!)

One thing I must note is this is not "quick & easy" cooking. Because the dishes rely so much on herbs and other produce for flavor, there is much washing and chopping involved. And the rice dishes, although not difficult, require some precise steps and attention to detail. So, those looking for fast & easy recipes will not find much here. But, if you have the time to spend, the results are well worth it. My only other criticism is I wish Shafia had included a section on bread. I understand that flatbreads are important in Persian cuisine, and she mentions using lavash bread for certain things, but doesn't provide any recipes or sources for good lavash (which may not be readily available to most Americans).

Overall, though, this is a terrific cookbook, and I highly recommend it.

Persian Cuisine for the Contemporary Palate
By James Wolfe
There are several books on Persian cuisine on the market, but none create such a timely fusion of traditional tastes and techniques with more health-conscious and organic-leaning ingredients, and few, if any, are so engaging, conversational and effortlessly informative as "The New Persian Kitchen." I learned a great deal about, for instance, the regional variations in Iranian cuisine, while still getting a perspective that is distinctly Iranian-American, a fascinating take in itself, as documentaries like the recent "The Iranian-Americans" on PBS explain. I don't know if old-school purists will have any issue with the creative (and healthy!) license Shafia takes with some of these recipes, such as Fesenjan and Shirin Pollo, but I figure younger, hipper Iranians and Americans alike are going to be thrilled to be able to reinvent and reimagine these dishes with ingredients like quinoa and other gluten-free grains, alternative sweeteners, and other healthier choices than just butter, butter, butter, and white rice for days. With a firm footing in the Persian traditions, and an awesome grasp of natural foods, this book is the best of both worlds, and brings together, oh, a few thousand years of global food culture! Highly, unreservedly recommended. . . .

Comprehensive and illuminating
By Diningwithdusty516
I first found out about Louisa Shafia's new book through a recent Epicurious interview that was promoting it; excited to try some new flavors, I sampled a few of the recipes (the Majoon and the Carrot Salad) and was immediately smitten. The ingredients worked beautifully together--from the carrots, cilantro and red chile flakes to the dates, yogurt and nutty, textured topping of the smoothie/shake. I decided that I had to have the book and pre-ordered it; since receiving it, I've made several more dishes: the Turmeric Chicken (flavorful and tender; the combination of the yellow chicken with the lime garnish was also visually pleasing), the Rhubarb, Strawberry and Mint salad (as refreshing as it sounds and a celebration of spring produce) and the Beet Burgers (a tasty and textured veggie burger). I can't wait until the weather gets cooler to try some of the soups and stews. This book is inspiring, lovely and with well-written and original recipes. Perhaps I feel this way (at least about the originality) since I don't know all about much about Persian cooking, but this is definitely a good resource to introduce one to both traditional and experimental Persian flavors.

About the Author
June Gray is a daydreamer who, at the age of ten, penned a short story inspired by a Judy Blume novel and has been unable to stop writing since. She loves to tell stories that titillate and enrage, that break the reader’s heart and put it back together again.

Her fairy-tale life has been lived on four different continents—most recently, in a two-hundred-forty-year-old castle in rural Germany owned by a Graf. She was born in the Philippines, raised in Australia, and now calls the United States home, and she can currently be found enjoying the shores of Miami with her husband, two daughters, and a miniature schnauzer.

She is the author of Disarm.

In pursuit of the happily ever after...
By Christina
Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Arrest essentially picks up where Disarm leaves off. Henry is about to finish up his training at the police academy and Elsie is finding success in her new position. Things are good for a while until the pressures of their jobs and the day-to-day reality of living with each other begin to take their toll.

As if dealing with Henry’s new career in law enforcement wasn’t enough, Elsie has to deal with a boss (Conor) that is obviously into her, and not quite willing to back off. When Henry becomes wrapped up in his career and is unwilling to share with Elsie the things that are bothering him, Conor’s attention become a source of comfort. Henry’s lack of communication and the temptation he faces from other women at every turn may lead Elsie into the arms of another man.

Henry, like many other new recruits, feel it is his job to save the world from all who threaten it, even at the expense of his sanity and marriage. Once again he is internalizing all of the wrongs of the world he cannot fix, yet is unwilling to burden Elsie with his problems, much less seek counseling to help him get through it. Will it take nearly losing everything important to him for Henry to finally understand that Elsie has reached her breaking point and can no longer continue on their current path? Will Elsie ever truly be able to trust Henry?

Law enforcement is a career many prior military gravitate to because there are so many similarities between the two. As civilians, we understand the military life a bit more because the danger service members face is a little more removed from our everyday lives. Deployments often take them thousands of miles from home, so there is a bit of an “out of sight, out of mind” factor involved. The separation of deployment we understand (or think we do) yet with law enforcement officers or fire fighters, they face danger in their own backyards. They are away from their families for long periods of time as well and their family lives suffer for it. No, it’s not months, but in a lot of ways, it’s almost worse to be so close to your family, yet not able to be a part of their lives because of what the job entails. Ms. Gray obviously has done her homework when it comes to understanding the toll the career can have on a family.

While Disarm left us with a feeling of a “happy for now” ending, Arrest gives us a sense that finally, Henry and Elsie are going to get their “happily ever after”. Their story has come full circle, and the ending is very cathartic, especially given the amount of emotional turmoil we have felt over the past two books. It feels like the hard work has paid off, and now they are free to reap the benefits of that work.

Arrest is another five star novel. It is well written and once again the characters are well developed and their pain, heartbreak, and joy are all very tangible. It was riveting from cover to cover and was another emotional roller coaster ride. Once again the love between Henry and Elsie is evident and very much real. We delve even further into their relationship and learn more about how their pasts have influenced their present, as well as their futures. I also loved that we learn more about Julie and her past with Jason and I love the familial relationship and friendship that is blooming between Julie and Elsie. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book, Surrender, when we will learn even more about Julie and Jason.

Talk Supe Reviews: Definite Must Read
By Braine @ Talk Supe
My heart! MY HEART! My poor heart went through a stiff beating from June Gray's ARREST. As if things in Disarm aren't enough, what I hoped was a smooth sailing HEA between Henry and Elsie was too much to hope for. This couple had many many things they had to work on before they even get to that blissful place we all imagine married book couples have. Old demons coming back to the surface, babies, job situations, miscommunication, pride, stragglers and a bunch of other stuff that throws a wrench on all of our perceived notions about happily ever after.

The best part about ARREST is how believable Henry and Elise's story is. It's not glossed over nor is it exaggerated. Theirs is a story that could happen to anybody and I'm sure that a lot of us can relate to their struggles one way or the other. Henry, to begin with, is already a fragile and vulnerable person. His childhood was rough and going to war certainly didn't help his disposition. Joining the [police] force is masochistic IMO because the cases he worked on dredged up a smorgasbord of issues, I'm surprised Elsie still managed keep it together for them.

The thing is, Henry carried some of his demons in his marriage to Elise so you can only imagine how trying that can be for Elsie. Now Elsie's a good gal but she's no martyr so she's reached her limit once or twice and I loved how she basically gave Henry the finger, cuing him him get his shiznit together or she's OUT! Girl's got some balls and I loved her for it! Henry sure irritated me a bit, I mean stop with the antics already! You got a great girl, apply what you've learned in therapy, man and make. It. Work!

The series is also mildly erotic and for someone who is so wary of sexed up novels, JGray sure has her own style of making intimacy not just erotic but emotionally sweeping too. Every sex scene between Henry and Elsie is a revelation of some sort and it's not just a physical expression of their love, frustration and sometimes even anger at each other. It's beyond sex, ALWAYS, a true depiction of "making love" if you get my drift.

I can't express how fiercely I love Disarm and now ARREST. I'm not a big fan of angsty tales and I sure hate emo characters but for some reason I loved Henry and Elsie. I believed in their love, their struggles are very real and even on those moments where they're acting childish and petty, I understood where those emotions are coming from. I rooted for these two like a rabid sports fan! Disarm and ARREST to me is the epitome of contemporary romance and a definite must-read.

A SWOON-WORTHY SEQUEL THAT WILL HOLD YOU PRISONER
By Kim R.
This sequel to DISARM has been on my TBR list for a while, and let me be perfectly clear: ARREST was well worth the wait! I really didn't expect the sequel to top the first novel in the series, but for some reason I was even more riveted this time around. Perhaps it's because I was already so invested in Elsie and Henry as a couple from DISARM, but I was literally swooning with delight from page one and felt so deeply for these characters! So much so that I had to literally force myself to put the novel down to tend to "real life." (Always a good sign). I've never read a "marriage in crisis" story quite like this before, but this book has all the qualities I look for in a satisfying, emotionally-charged romance novel--endearingly flawed couple who have an intense connection and share a rich history, and a well-developed storyline chock full of drama, turmoil, romantic angst and sizzling sexual encounters. June's dialogue is punchy and true-to-life, and her romantic narrative is simply stellar--it's fueled with emotion and teeming with complexity and depth, and she masterfully infuses her prose with beautiful, descriptive language to engage the reader's senses, heighten the emotion/sensuality, and bring her characters to full, vibrant life!

There is a level of realism to this author's writing that is refreshingly unique, and her characters are simply unforgettable. Elsie is strong and independent, yet sweet and vulnerable at the same time, and she loves her chivalrous, long-suffering husband with every aching breath she takes. As for Henry, he is a hot, sexy, tortured Alpha hero--an ex-military man-turned rookie cop--who will capture the reader's heart...and then shatter it into a million tiny pieces. I rooted for these beleaguered newlyweds every second of the way, and these characters sure do seem to face some insurmountable odds before they finally get their HEA! But it's certainly not all doom and gloom in this book. June balances out the darker elements with plenty of flirtatious fun, sweetness and hot, erotic sex.

Bottom line: This second installment in the Disarm series is outstanding, and not to be missed. June is a very skilled, evocative storyteller and obviously has a very bright career ahead of her... She has set the bar very high with this book, but I look forward to reading SURRENDER, the next book in her DISARM series, at my earliest opportunity!

Review
"The writing style…is extremely student friendly and accessible. It is actually enjoyable to read, which is rather rare for textbooks. It is completely attuned to the needs of an undergraduate student population."

"The greatest strength of CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY: THE HUMAN CHALLENGE is its success in addressing complex concepts in a manner that is memorable and easy to comprehend. Another strength is in the choice of examples; most all of them engage the reader and elicit furthering investigation. Finally, the book's photographs and other images provide a visual element that reinforces significant issues in anthropology."

The authors do a good job of providing "interesting specific examples and ethnographic accounts to give the chapter context and help illustrate sometimes abstract information…"

anthropology instructor recommends
By Tess of the twins plus one
I use this book in my cultural anthropology courses in part because it does what is expected: cover the major divisions of what an introductory class should expose students. However, the plus to me is that the last couple of chapters cover culture contact and change based on a dominant culture coming in contact with smaller groups and also covers "globalization" which is directly relevant to the lives of my students. So at the end of our term we can switch a bit from abstract academic discussions to issues happening the in the world today. We examine concepts like "modernization" and whether the western dominant perspective that this is always good (for everyone) is true and we look at global issues that affect our species, nation, security, and subsistence from a diverse perspective. Adding Annual Editions brings the text to life, as well.

good text book
By not mark twain
I bought this book for a class. I thought the book would be terribly dry as most text books are, but this one supprised me. I actually tried to read the entire book (instead of skimming like I usually do with a text book) because everything in it was very interesting. I also like the way it is set up with the stories in inserted boxes, and the key words highlighted and defined in the paragraph and also at the bottom of the page.

Great Condition, Wonderful text
By R Srz
The condition of the item was exactly as it was described by the seller. Aside from a few highlighted portions, the book looked practically new. Also, it arrived quickly. More importantly, the text book is very interesting and I highly recommend it for any students of anthropology, sociology, or the human condition.

This reference book for art students, teachers, and professionals presents examples of finished paintings, as well as color charts that demonstrate color mixing as it applies to watercolors, acrylics, and oils. Students learn how to choose and mix colors to produce the maximum color range from the minimum number of paints. The book starts with a comprehensive, illustrated explanation of color theory, demonstrated with reference to the color wheel of primary and secondary colors. In separate sections that follow, the authors—each an expert in different paint media—show how to approach watercolors, acrylics, and oils. In addition to color charts, the book presents reproductions of gallery paintings in all three media to show how various hues are created and used. Still life illustrations, each with a detailed analysis of its color make-up, enable students to put theory into practice. Hundreds of color illustrations.

Dated colors and incomplete
By christine
At first glance this book looks very promising. I got this to help me teach my adult art students multiple ways to mix colors. I do like how the exact measurement of each color is shown. The art examples are nice and the book is layed out in an attractive way with oil, acrylic and watercolor shown. What makes the book not useful is, the odd color choices of paints. It seems dated, and not current with the newest and best light-fast (permanent) materials. For example, color manufacturers make permanent alizarin crimson, why buy the old one when it will fade in a short time? Also, the newer quinacridone reds, mauves or yellows are not mentioned. They are great colors and won't fade like colors such as Carmine. Cadmium colors are featured and they are expensive, there are better alternatives for students on a budget (new gamboge, and winsor yellow in watercolor for example). Similarly, I would never encourage student to mix with black or paynes gray. That seems like cheating. Isn't this a book about mixing color? It seems pretty obvious that black will dull a bright color to make it more neutral. Learn to mix neutrals of your own grays through complimentary colors. I'm not sure I'd even recommend this for beginners, as it gets you to buy the wrong colors from the start.

Needed for class, everything is online nowadays.
By Pavl
So I was required to get this book to class but honestly everything in it you can find online for free with video tutorials and such. This would only be a necessary book if you have no access to the internet.
But if you need the book it has well detailed steps and illustrations with the commands.

Good book to learn AutoCAD but with limitations
By mark vitacco
I will start by stating there is no perfect text book, I have seen a lot worse than the Dix book.
The pro's: This book does an excellent job teaching you how to use the software. The tutorials are accurate and easy to follow.
The con's: The book's weakness is with respect to following established drafting conventions. Turn to just about any page, and you will find inaccuracies or omissions with respect to drafting conventions. The author creates a lot of confusion but not using model and paper space as professions in industry. There is a lot of emphasis on setting limits and using a grid, and (grid) snap, professionals, least the ones I work with, don't work this way. The design indent of AutoCAD is that model space is not restricted. AutoCAD uses layout tabs to define the paper space used for plotting. My last comment, is there is little emphasis (1/2 page?) on the Annotative Scale feature. This is a huge feature available since 2008, that I believe will greatly simplify annotation for beginners, and should be covered in detail.

What the spell delivered was master hacker Walter Wiz Zumwalt. The wizard who east the spell was dead and nobody -- not the elves, not the dwarves, not even the dragons -- could figure out what the shanghaied computer nerd was good for.But spells are a lot like computer programs, and, in spite of the Wiz's unprepossessing appearance, he was going to defeat the all-powerful Black League, win the love of a beautiful red-haired witch, and prove that when it comes to spells and sorcery, nobody but nobody can beat a Silicon Valley computer geek!

lousy editing of a wonderfull story
By Shimon
I love these books. During a recent move, I lost my copy of Wizard's Bane, the first book in this wonderfull series. I was very sad when I found out it was out of print. Then I saw this book on Amazon. The first 2 books in the series, reprinted together! I bought it, read it, and almost burned it. The editing is so horible, it almost ruins the story. Paragraphs run together, or are split for no apparent reason. Quotation marks and other punctuation are missing, extra, or in the wrong place. In some places text is repeted. The editor who let this piece of unmitigated junk go to print aught to be exiled to Siberia. This story is a must read, but only buy this book if there is no way you can get your hands on a copy of the original printing.

Great fantasy writing with a taste of nerdiness
By Daniel Froehlich
Very good classical fantasy writing, with a nice taste of nerdiness.
The writer, Rick Cook, has a very good vocabulary - don't be ashamed if you have to look some words up. The writing flows very well, and the plot is pretty well-developed. It mixes classical fantasy - elves and dragons, "my Lord" and "my Lady" - with modern (well, 70's to 90's) hacker culture. It's very interesting, and quite well done. If you know what Unix and FORTH are, you'll enjoy this component of this book.

Overall, I do heartily recommend this collection of the first two books.
My only gripe is the poor editing - occasionally, some punctuation is messed up. It is uncommon, maybe once every 10 or 20 pages at minimum Kindle print size, but it can be glaring at times. I recommend it nonetheless. I know I'll be getting the next two books.

I read this a number of years ago… And had forgotten how much I had enjoyed it. It was a great opportunity to revisit a great story and enjoy the fantasy once again. If you have not read this before it is well worth the time.

The Gathering, by Anne Enright

Anne Enright is a dazzling writer of international stature and one of Ireland’s most singular voices. Now she delivers The Gathering, a moving, evocative portrait of a large Irish family and a shot of fresh blood into the Irish literary tradition, combining the lyricism of the old with the shock of the new. The nine surviving children of the Hegarty clan are gathering in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother, Liam, drowned in the sea. His sister, Veronica, collects the body and keeps the dead man company, guarding the secret she shares with him—something that happened in their grandmother’s house in the winter of 1968. As Enright traces the line of betrayal and redemption through three generations her distinctive intelligence twists the world a fraction and gives it back to us in a new and unforgettable light. The Gathering is a daring, witty, and insightful family epic, clarified through Anne Enright’s unblinking eye. It is a novel about love and disappointment, about how memories warp and secrets fester, and how fate is written in the body, not in the stars.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Significant Seven, November 2007: Pretty early on in The Gathering you realize that in her lingering portrait of the Hegarty clan (and this isn't hyperbole--they are a family of 12), Irish novelist Anne Enright will wrestle with all the giant literary tropes that have come before her. Family, of course, is the big one, but with equal intensity she explores death and dying, the sea and its siren song, sex, shame, secrecy, unreliable memories, madness, "the drink," and--always in the shadows--England. That said, it's not like any other novel about the Irish that I've read. The story of the Hegartys is indeed bleak, and hard, but it surges with tenderness and eloquent thought which, in the end, are the very things that help this family (or at least her narrator Veronica) survive. Through her eyes, and in Enright's skillful imagination, those small turning-point moments of life that we all know in some form or another--a petty fight, a careless word, an event witnessed--come together in an unshakeable vision of how you become the person you are. --Anne Bartholomew

From Publishers Weekly
In the taut latest from Enright (What Are You Like?), middle-aged Veronica Hegarty, the middle child in an Irish-Catholic family of nine, traces the aftermath of a tragedy that has claimed the life of rebellious elder brother Liam. As Veronica travels to London to bring Liam's body back to Dublin, her deep-seated resentment toward her overly passive mother and her dissatisfaction with her husband and children come to the fore. Tempers flare as the family assembles for Liam's wake, and a secret Veronica has concealed since childhood comes to light. Enright skillfully avoids sentimentality as she explores Veronica's past and her complicated relationship with Liam. She also bracingly imagines the life of Veronica's strong-willed grandmother, Ada. A melancholic love and rage bubbles just beneath the surface of this Dublin clan, and Enright explores it unflinchingly. (Sept.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
The Gathering, Irish author Anne Enright’s fourth novel, displays the author’s exceptional skill at exposing dysfunctional family dynamics and the hollow pretense of middle-class life in newly affluent, postmodern Ireland. Her light, elegant prose and rich portrait of the Hegartysâ€"of Veronica, in particularâ€"won praise from the critics. While recognizing that some readers may find the story lacking in plot, they applauded the depth and intensity of this "slow deconstruction of memory and self" (Los Angeles Times). Bleak and unsentimental, Veronica’s interior dialogues are nevertheless lyrical and clever. Though at times Enright may strain to encompass too much of the Irish experience, critics generally agreed that this dark, evocative novel was a worthy recipient of the 2007 Man Booker Prize.

Uneven

The Booker prize is a strange beast. The books that make it to the short list are usually excellent, yet somehow the worst of those always gets chosen.

I expected to loveloveLOVE this book. I adore books about multi-generational family dysfunction, and I'm a total sucker for evocative locales. This book covers a large Irish family from the 1920s to the current day. The plot is driven by funeral arrangements for the family's black sheep, who has committed suicide. The writing is lovely. It is almost impossible for me to dislike a book that contains so many fascinating elements. Sadly, however, "The Gathering" is that book.

This is not to say the it's a total loss. What Enright can do, she does well. For instance, she perfectly captures the strange and malleable thing that is childhood memory. I found myself nodding along as the main character, Veronica, describes her grandparent's house and various members of the extended family through eight-year-old eyes. Enright clearly wants to convey the uncertainty of memory and she succeeds. Veronica vividly remembers events that may or may not have occurred, or perhaps involved her siblings rather than herself. Additionally, her prose is beautiful. You'll be struck more than once by a sentence that's horrible, gorgeous, brilliant, and despairing all at once.

At the same time, I agree with all the criticisms levelled here. The book jumps haphazardly from the present to the past, and if that wasn't bad enough, it's often unclear whether it's all a figment of Veronica's imagination. I think Enright wanted to intensify the sense of uncertainty around the stories we tell to make sense of our family history. She uses a heavy hand, and the end result is a confused mess.

This mess is most painful when it comes to Veronica's relationship with her husband. They are on the verge of divorce, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong. Apparently her husband works a highly competitive field, and is unsatisfied. Wow, who knew THAT could happen? Or maybe her husband has cheated on her. It's hard to tell when Veronica states that her husband stays with her because he hates her. Yes, that might seem strange to the average reader, but that's before you learn that he, like all men, hates her because he doesn't want to lose control during orgasm.

This leads me to another point, one I was surprised to see no mention of: the narrator deeply, profoundly despises men. It's so pointed that I thought perhaps Enright wanted the reader to assume that Veronica was sexually abused, though it's not explicitly described. The generalizations about men as sex starved, narcissistic monsters come early and often. I'm not sure if just the narrator is bitter, or if perhaps the author is as well.

Additionally, I have to agree that the book is often self-indulgent and overwrought. If you're looking frequent and unflattering descriptions of genetalia, then this is the book for you. The romantic relationships generally start with people falling in love, or life-long lust, at first glance. Additionally, Veronica emphasizes over and over the haunting, stunning, heart breakingly blue eyes all the children have. Is this a serious work of literature, or a romance novel?

Even the writing, the strongest point in the book stumbles more than once. The first time Veronica describes a family member as "human meat", I was shocked and enthralled. Unfortunately, this metaphor loses some power after half a dozen uses.

Finally, I may be jaded, but this family didn't seem all that dysfunctional. There's tragedy, but when you're describing several dozen people's lives, what are the odds that every single one is happy and normal? Isn't that just life? Of course it's painful for the people involved, but I'm not sure that Enright realizes that pain, though it feels special when it happens to you, is quite ordinary.

I'll probably try another one of Enright's books, but overall, this one was not worth the effort.

A bitter little pill of a book.
By frumiousb
There are some books which I enjoy a lot as I read them. Later, however, when I put them down I find that I hardly remember what they had to say.

The Gathering is a little bit of the opposite experience. As I read, I was not at all sure what it was that I was supposed to be reading. It is fairly difficult to access, and not terribly forgiving of lapsed attention. Mostly I found myself saying to myself: "Why? Why did this win the Man Booker Prize?" But then somewhere towards the end, Enright pulls a magic trick. The book wraps itself up somehow, and is at once something shining. Something, dare I say it, which would like to fly. But still, I was not really sure that this was enough. It came so late in the book and what came before that moment was so leaden, I was not sure what I wanted to think. I mean, what I wanted to think about the overall experience.

Given time, the experience of reading the book has settled a little bit. I find that instead of growing more distant, I actually feel closer to the novel. I like it more. I have the impulse to buy another book by Enright. I am willing to forgive The Gathering its sharp edges and elbows.

And boy oh boy does this book have sharp elbows. It is a bitter little pill of a novel. Just like its main character, it resists sympathy and identification. Enright uses fantasy, disjointed narrative, unpleasant people doing unpleasant things-- pretty much every device that you can imagine to force the reader back outside the text. It makes for such a strange combination because she writes with such lyrical prose and such a delicate hand that you expect to find the book yielding. The contrast is very interesting, but in the end I am not sure how successful The Gathering really is-- largely for that reason.

I remain surprised that it won the Man Booker Prize. I took a look at the reviews on Amazon, and am not shocked to find them universally savage. An Irish female writer dealing with the subject of a dysfunctional family has a certain flavor to it-- carries a load of expectation. Those poor readers who go into it expecting The Book of Ruth or some other typical Oprah pick are going to be angry, not just disappointed. Some bad things happen, but often the narrator is just cranky. You are not allowed to feel that you have understood the past; sometimes the main character just makes things up. No catharsis, no redemption, no Irish brogue. The prose is pretty, but pretty like a snake in the grass is pretty. It glitters and it hisses and it does not really let you touch its skin.

This book reminds me of myself in truly black rages-- when I want to share nothing with nobody and go through the past as though I were reading a grocery list. In those moods, I would pull the head off of anyone who tried to sympathize or pretended to understand. This book has the mean reds.

But then that lightness at the end-- I don't know. I still need to think about this one a while longer.

In summary, for me, interesting. I am impressed, but have doubts. Please be aware of what you are getting before you start to read the novel. There is nothing worse than biting into what you think is a raspberry and getting a wasabi pea. Think bitter and think dark and you will be better prepared.

This is not a comfortable book; it is an honest
By phyllis
At first I was very put off by the book because I was lost. I didn't know what had to do with what. But what made me stay with the book is the incredible power of the writing and the dark humor. There are lines in this book that almost make me cry because they are said so movingly. Once I realized what was going on (and I wish we knew a little earlier), then all hell broke lose in my head. This is not a comfortable book; it is an honest, accurate, very real book. The confusion of the narrator in terms of her own abuse was written by someone who obviously knew what she was writing about. A beautiful but sad book which I will remember a long time.
