About the Author
Rebecca Ferrini, MD, MPH is the Medical Director of Edgemoor, a 170-bed long-term care facility for the indigent run by the County of San Diego in Santee, California. Her duties include both administrative responsibilities and clinical care.. Dr. Ferrini received her M.D. from the University of California at San Diego in 1991 and her Masters in Public Health in Maternal and Child Health in 1995. She completed a General Preventive Medicine Residency at California State University, San Diego/University of California San Diego Joint Residency Program. She has Board Certifications in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and General Preventive Medicine and is a certified nursing home medical director from the American Medical Director’s Association. She has published extensively in the areas of medical practice guidelines and policy-making, as well as education, pain control and epidemiology.

Armeda Ferrini, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Health and Community Services at California State University at Chico, received her M.S. in Family and Child Development at Kansas State University and her Ph.D. in Health Science at the University of Utah. She has been teaching the course, Health in the Later Years, for more than 25 years.

Outrageous!!!!!!!!

I rented Health in the Later Years back in September 2013. The book was due back December 2013 and I returned it before the due date. It said I would receive an email saying when the book was received. Here it is Jan 2014 I noticed an email on my phone from Amazon and it read "Thank you for returning your rental of Health in the Later Years. We were not able to accept your return for the following reasons: Pages Damaged You have been charged $$$$$$ for the textbook. We will return the textbook to you within 30 days and it is yours to keep." Wow!!! that was an expensive book, I could have lived off the money they charged me for a month. Still waiting to here the outcome. I will never again rent a textbook from Amazon again. Whoever inspected the textbook before it left the warehouse must have had cataracts or was blind. Never again will you screw me over Amazon.

Update!!!! I called the next day to check the status on my refund and they said it may take 2 or 3 business days. I woke up the next morning and check my email. It was refunded back to me, Thanks.

One of my last college courses!

I am thoroughly enjoying this class, as so much of it is relevant either to my aging parents, both in a nursing home, or my disabled husband, who has MS. Learning many things, and the book is well-written and not a long boring tedious text. Divided into fairly short pieces that I am easily able to understand (not a bunch of long words that I have to look up). Great book, great class, great format!

About the Author

Barbara B. Levin is a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). Her research interests include studying teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and the development of teacher thinking across the career span, integrating technology into the K–16 curriculum, and using case-based pedagogies and problem-based learning in teacher education. Levin is an associate editor of Teacher Education Quarterly and has authored or coauthored numerous journal articles and three books, including Who Learns What From Cases and How? The Research Base on Teaching With Cases (1999), Energizing Teacher Education and Professional Development With Problem-Based Learning (2001), and Case Studies of Teacher Development: An In-Depth Look at How Thinking About Pedagogy Develops Over Time (2003). Levin completed a PhD in educational psychology at the University of California at Berkeley in 1993. Prior to that, she taught elementary school students and was a computer specialist for 17 years.

Disaster at sea

Another night to remember, the sinking of the "RMS Titanic" in the icy cold North Atlantic a hundred years ago, the "SS Andrea Doria's" collision with the "MS Stockholm" and its capsizing in 1956 off Nantucket, and now on January 13, 2012, the Italian cruise liner "MS Costa Concordia" strikes bottom and flounders off the coast of a small island in the Tuscan Archipelago.

John Hooper tells the story as it should be told. He uses a reporter's instinct for observation and detail and from the facts weaves a great narrative involving many of the people aboard the pleasure liner.

Among the 4,000 passengers were Dean Ananias, 64, a Vietnam vet and retired schoolteacher from Downey, Calif., his wife Georgia and daughters Valerie, 31 and Cindy, 23. The Ananias family was on holiday, getting away and hoping for a relaxing cruise through western Mediterranean.

At 9 p.m. on that cold Tuscan evening they were enjoying a late dinner in the ship's two-story restaurant, in the middle of their salad course, when they felt the Concordia shudder. It seemed they said as if they were in the middle of a mini-earthquake.

Then the thumping stopped and with a boom, everything went black and they began being pelted from the restaurant's upper level by a cascade of dishes, glasses and silverware. That was the beginning of their five-hour ordeal during which four times they said their goodbyes, feeling certain that they were going to die.

At one point with the ship listing almost perpendicular to the water they found themselves clambering on the hull, hanging on while fearing that the ship was about to roll and capsize taking them under. They were clinging to the port side of the ship and totally unaware that the Concordia had settled on a shoal only 70 meters from shore and that safety was less than a football field away. The Ananias' story is one of many personal accounts Hooper reports. All of them are harrowing.

Videos of heated arguments between crew and hysterical passengers went viral. Rumors circulated about a drunken captain showboating and then cowardly deserting the ship for safety and leaving hundreds of terrified passengers in a panic, struggling to survive. Hooper takes a close look at events sorts through the facts and speculation and creates a vivid account of what it must have been like during those five hours of pandemonium.

When it was over 17 people had been confirmed dead and 15 were still missing. Although Hooper's story is relatively short, more like a long magazine article, it feels comprehensive and as accurate as it is captivating.

What was the captain thinking?

I think that what really captured the world's attention in the Costa Concordia incident was that exactly one hundred years after the sinking of the Titanic, a huge, modern cruise ship with high tech navigation and propulsion systems could founder on the rocks within seventy meters of land. The pictures of the giant ship rolled on its side within spitting distance of a lighthouse were an almost surreal sight, but sobering in the fact that almost three dozen people are believed to have died.

Author John Hooper has done a splendid job of putting the pieces together in a very readable account of the disaster, one that focuses on the human interest element of the story. The experiences of several passengers were related, including Domnica Cemortan (was she the "Mystery Blonde" who was with the ship's captain the night of the accident?) and Father Massimo Donghi, who had told his parishioners that he was on a spiritual retreat, but was found out when his name was mentioned as a survivor. With the confusion that reigned after the collision, and the conflicting orders being given to the passengers, it now seems a miracle that more than four thousand passengers and crew were saved.

But the real "star" of the story was the Costa Concordia's captain, Francesco Schettino. The case against Schettino will undoubtedly play out on the Italian judicial system for years to come, but apparently he was performing a risky and dangerous "sail-past" of the little island of Giglio. As reckless as that was, when the poo hit the fan, Schettino's behavior went from bad to worse, as he was one of the first to abandon the stricken ship. (I learned that a captain going down with his ship is not just a tradition in Italy. Under Italian maritime law, a captain who deserts the passengers and crew can go to prison for several years.)

As befits a Kindle Short, the story is brief--about a half-hour read for most--with no wasted words. Intriguing reading, and highly recommended.

EDIT (2-22-12): I looked up Giglio ("Isola del Giglio") on Google Earth. Interestingly, a picture of the Costa Concordia has been overlaid on the aerial photography to show its location (turn on the "3D Buildings" level of Google Earth to see it).

More of a short magazine article. I thought I had just finished the introduction - names of people, a little history - and then it was done. It made me want more but I don't think I'll pay for it here.

Plan for Success

First, I suppose, a note about me. I'm a business analyst for a professional services company (consulting and custom software development for external customers). I've been with them for over 5 years and work with clients in many business domains including financial services, manufacturing, insurance, and pharmaceuticals. In the past, I've held jobs as a (really bad) developer and a (really good) quality analyst. Now, for the review.

This book on project plan tasks for BA's and QA's includes a solid baseline, but is not exhaustive. If you're a seasoned professional, this probably won't be very helpful for you. However, if your projects are going over budget or you're new to working in either of these roles or perhaps new to planning and estimating your project tasks, this might be helpful as a primer.

The book has 155 locations and includes 14 tasks for business analysts and 25 tasks for quality analysts. The guide assumes that you are familiar with software development and its terminology. If you're green, you might need to look up a few terms. The book deals mostly with the Requirements Planning and Management knowledge area if you are familiar with the IIBA's BABOK. If the majority of your job is in the Enterprise Analysis area, be aware that there are only a few tasks described in the book to help you.

Depending upon your organization's software development methodology and your primary job function, there may be several critical tasks missing from this guide that you need to factor into your project plan. I'm not sure if the author assumed that it was included in each of the other tasks listed, but remember that you will need time to plan your meetings, plan your requirements elicitation approach, plan your workshop, etc. This is often forgotten and a large chunk of time is frittered away with planning. You will also need time for analysis of any artifacts that are provided to you and the existing solution. If there's nothing for you to use as a starting point to help plan out your elaboration, you will need time to do research as the requirements gathering progresses. You'll probably also need time to do impact, gap, and/or conflict analysis on your requirements as you start to flesh them out. As a BA, you don't just hear something and write it down like so many people think - you need time to digest the information, noodle on it (I call it marinating time), so don't forget to include a task for it or estimate it in your other tasks. If you don't have a requirements tool, ensure that you allocate time for requirements traceability (BR to FR to UC/diagram/wireframe/mockup, etc.). The author mentions the creation of mockups and current/future state flows, but there are many other types of diagrams that can be used to help convey, clarify, or put requirements in context - so don't forget to factor those into your project plan.

This book addresses most of the tasks that BA's do during requirements gathering, but doesn't include any BA tasks for the development and testing phases. In my organization, BA's are involved in each stage of the project with the volume of work concentrated during the requirements elicitation and documentation phase, ramping down during development, and then picking back up during the testing phases. During development, our BA's are responsible for requirements clarification, communication, and management, as well as reviewing the test plan and test cases produced by the QA team. We also do scope enforcement and solution validation at a minimum. If training or help documentation are required for the QA team or the client, our BA's lead those efforts. During testing, our BA's continue to provide the above mentioned "services" as well as issue verification (sometimes called scope verification). Sometimes, our BA's will act as the QA and/or UAT Lead and therefore perform additional tasks for those roles. If your organization has a similar model, also think about those tasks.

The guide is heavily weighted with QA tasks and is more comprehensive (in my opinion) than the BA section. The only potential tasks I would add to the author's list are vulnerability assessments and/or penetration tests. In my organization, these would be supported by a technical lead, but in others, I imagine these might be supported/facilitated by a testing coordinator.

In the end, this is a decent starting place for those new to planning requirements gathering or testing phases, but might not be quite as useful for those with more experience.

About the Author

Mark Evan Bonds is the Cory C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has taught since 1992. He holds degrees from Duke University (BA), Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (MA), and Harvard University (PhD). His publications include Wordless Rhetoric: Musical Form and the Metaphor of the Oration (1991), After Beethoven: Imperatives of Symphonic Originality (1996), and Music asThought: Listeningto the Symphony in the Age of Beethoven (2006). He has also published essays on the music of Haydn and Mozart and has served as editor-in-chief of Beethoven Forum.

Worth the money!

I bought this book new for my music history class last year. Sure, as the complete package of CDs, anthologies, and this textbook can add up to be really expensive, I am just talking about the textbook as it stands alone.

For starters, this is the first textbook that I have ever read all the way through (sticky tabs line the edge of it!), and that is quite an impressive accomplishment for an undergraduate student. I believe that the textbook is not only well researched, but also very well-written. I was actually captivated in my reading, which also leads to explaining why I've finished this book and not any others. The format and outlines of the sections and chapters are well-conceived and there is a lot of extra information that is relevant to the topics discussed in each chapter. I especially like the composer biographies that intercede shortly after he or she is mentioned for the first time. In this way, it helped me gain more of an expansive knowledge of the composer: how he or she lived, his or her notable achievements, other pieces written by the composer and for what type of instruments/ensembles...instead of only being able to associate the one listening example associated with the composer, and pretending I know everything about a composer because of that. There are plenty of pictures and illustrations to go with, and most of them are beneficial to the reading. I also liked that Bonds would link world history to music history (as music, especially in more modern times, has always been greatly influenced by history).

Sub-par teacher or excellent teacher? Whatever you've got, you can learn a lot from this book alone! The combined edition in hardcover is a plus and that's already how it is published! Enjoy!

Pretty Good

I've actually enjoyed reading this text. Some nice side stories to go along with the times and composers. Granted I like history and I like music... So it's hard not to like it. I give it a 4 star rating because I hate paying for college textbooks. I always feel ripped off and ashamed afterwards...

This book was required for a class. It's well written and interesting. Must be used with accompanying CD's and annotated scores (sold separately) for best use. I was very surprised to have ordered a paperback version but received a hardback copy!
