From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—This is a appealing graphic novel, gorgeously illustrated by French costume designer and illustrator Goetzinger. The story covers the 1947 groundbreaking first fashion show put on by designer Christian Dior, when he introduced weary post-World War II patrons to the "New Look"—yards and yards of fabric and fantasy after years of shortages and short skirts. We watch the magic happen through the eyes of Clara Nohant, a young "fashion chronicler," a fictional character injected into the story amid real-life modistes, drapers, pattern makers, muses, magazine editors, and movie stars who surrounded the designer. Particularly informative and educational are the representations of all the hard work that went into the creation of a Dior "line": from conception to realization to presentation, and the loyalty, inspiration, and support the designer's team provided him. Goetzinger's renderings of each character, from Dior's beloved dog "Bobby" to French grandmères to Hollywood icons is distinct and memorable in every respect. And the clothes! The sweep and drape of the gowns and the exquisite cut of the suits and hats will make would-be designers and future fashion chroniclers shiver. Clara's fairy-tale journey from journalist to model to Dior confidante and client feels as fresh as if it happened last week. VERDICT This title is like a perfect Dior creation: stunningly designed, lavishly beautiful, effortlessly elegant. Fashionistas and fashionistos of all ages will devour this book hungrily.—Liz French, Library Journal

Review

“Great gift idea.”  —Elle "Just like with Dior’s work, the allure of this graphic novel is in the visuals, and Goetzinger draws the reader into the glamorous world of Dior’s Paris with her gentle but intricately detailed linework." —Oliver Sava, A.V. Club "Goetzinger's illustrations are clean and crisp, just like Dior's dresses, and her use of color, such as when a new collection is introduced and needs to be shown as both bold and understated, is masterly. And there’s a lot of tension in the story. After the war, Dior and his clients may have been wealthy, but most French people were still living hand to mouth. In an early scene, Clara is staging a photo shoot at a farmers’ market. When one of the models casually bites into an apple, the poor vendors go nuts because food is still being rationed." —Wally Bubelis, unshelved.com

“A portrait full of lightness and class, capable of charming even men, so you can imagine how women will love this.”  —Le Figaro

“Girl in Dior, by Annie Goetzinger, a grande dame of comics in France, will be published in the U.S. by NBM in March. In addition to her work in comics, Ms. Goetzinger has done theater costume design and fashion illustrations for Le Monde. Her book is a biography of Christian Dior couched in a fictional Cinderella story about a fashion reporter plucked to become a model. It includes endnotes drawn from Ms. Goetzinger’s archival research." —Jennifer Maloney, Wall St. Journal

"This is for fans of beauty and refinement, both in comics and in clothing, an indulgent present for those who love fashion and the female form." —Publishers Weekly

"In sweeping tableaux and panels, she deftly captures the movement and drape of fabric with a line that’s a more sensual take on the traditional Franco-Belgian comics style of her contemporaries . . . In any language, it make readers nostalgic for the elegance and artistry of a bygone fashion scene." —Nathalie Atkinson, the Globe and Mail

"A hymn to beauty, and - through Clara's personal story - to optimism and endurance." —Anna Battista, irenebrination.typepad.com

"Writer/artist Annie Goetzinger is one of France’s best-known names, and it’s obvious why. Her art here is skilled and spare, focusing the eye exactly where needed with nary an extra line or cross-hatch. This elegant, airy look is abetted by a color palette almost entirely in pastels. While fashion isn’t to everyone’s taste, Girl in Dior can be." —Andrew A. Smith, Indiana Gazette

"The familiar nipped waists and full skirts of Dior's famous New Look silhouette are rendered in beautiful detail." —Lisa Niven, Vogue UK

"This comic, ultimately, is not about just fashion, but about how fashion and clothing affected and reflected the lives of women as the entire world recovered from great tragedy." —Janelle Asselin, comicsalliance.com

"A great tale of haute couture and whimsy." —Danielle Crawford, fortheloveoffrock.com

Girl is Dior is a confection of a graphic novel!
By Suzanne Lay
Illustrator Annie Goetzinger has created a confection of a graphic novel. Set it February of 1947, the great designer Dior is about to debut his new fashions. WWII is over, the boys are coming home and rationing will end and the dresses will celebrate. They are glorious creations showing tiny waists that marvelous sumptuous skirts drape from. I think this work is a wonderful format to tell the story of a visual art and teach history at the same time. All of this is seen though the eyes of a young fashion reporter, Clara Nohant. Her character will be familiar to this millenniums student as one of the commentators on today’s red carpets. In this story Clara becomes the Cinderella who is chosen to be a model of the “New Look.” Mixed in this delightful book is a look at the workers, movie stars, streets and buildings of a very special world. Even Dior’s famous dog Buddy makes an appearance. Recommended Grade 9 up

GIRL IN DIOR is a Delight
By Henry Chamberlain
If you are open to what a graphic novel has to offer, you may be quite pleased. This absolutely holds true when we consider this latest work by master cartoonist Annie Goetzinger. Graphic novels come in various forms, indeed. If you come in with certain expectations, you may end up missing out.

Annie Goetzinger has quite a light touch to her drawings that manage to speak volumes. It is one thing to draw pretty women in chic settings and quite another to convey the humanity and complexity behind the story. Goetzinger’s graphic novel, “Girl in Dior,” does just that with her behind-the-scenes look at the life and work of legendary fashion designer Christian Dior.

The House of Dior, at 30 Avenue Montaigne, was meant to evoke a cross between Louis XVI and the dawn of the 20th Century. It was to be made up of white paneling, pearl gray satin, taffeta lampshades, and discretely placed bouquets and kentia palms. It was not based upon anyone’s reality but upon Dior’s own childhood daydreams. It was to be the perfect place, the epicenter for high fashion, beginning with the first Dior fashion show for the Spring-Summer collection for 1947.

Amid the refined mayhem that ensues, we meet our main character, Clara Nohant, a budding fashion columnist. It is through the fictional Clara that we can savor certain key moments and get a sense of the world of Dior. As only a graphic novel can offer, we can get very specific upon what you view and linger upon. In the right hands, this results in such a masterpiece as this. Goetzinger is a master cartoonist. She well knows that she cannot show you every last detail. Instead, she must pick and choose.

She spends a good portion of time simply reveling in that special moment that was the launch of the House of Dior. After all, it sent shockwaves throughout the fashion world and led women, around the world, to consider lowering their hemlines. Having given the reader a solid grounding on that event, she quickens the pace. Clara goes from one major blunder to landing herself the role as the latest model to join the Dior inner circle.

This book is a delight to read through and through. Some books you keep, and this one is a keeper. The art is stunning in how it works within the confines of elegant refinement. Goetzinger’s background in fashion illustration serves her well as she effortlessly captures the flow of fabric and the carriage and grace of the models. And her stylish line is complimented by her gorgeous use of watercolor. In her hands, the fashion world, while always cool and detached, never goes cold. In the end, there’s a warm human touch to this tale of high fashion.

Yes, this book is a sheer delight and will appeal to any age.

I'm especially in love with his little daytime dresses with jackets
By Nicola Mansfield
I don't know anything about Dior except that his dresses are gorgeous; I'm especially in love with his little daytime dresses with jackets. This made all the information in this graphic about the beginning of Dior's breakout collection through the eyes of a new model very new to me and I didn't realize the model was a fictional character until the end of the book which does make the story a little confusing. However, the inside look at the fashion industry after WWII and the early 50s is amazingly eye-opening and so very different from today and yet in regards to the false feminine perception of perfection disturbingly the same. I really enjoyed the look inside this world during this era and would say the book is mostly about the industry and Dior's dresses and influence than about the man himself. However, the book's pièce de résistance is the breathtaking artwork. An entirely beautiful book which captures the pure brilliant beauty of the dresses and designs in a unique way. The book will be appreciated by all, but somehow I think I missed out a bit by not knowing the subject matter better beforehand. Knowledgable Christian Dior enthusiasts will come away the most inspired from this gorgeous book worthy of adding to any collection.
