They used to be a unit: Flora, twins Bluebell and Iris, Twig, and Jasmine. But now Iris is dead, and the family is falling apart. Dad spends most of his time in Warwick—perhaps writing, perhaps having an affair (possibly both, of course). Mum jets around for her new job. The kids are being watched by male au pair Zoran. And Blue, almost 13, is watching from behind her video camera, trying not to get involved with life when it can hurt you so badly. But life has a way of drawing in even the reluctant. When wild, sweet Joss moves next door, he captures her heart, only to break it after becoming involved with Flora. Still, there is skateboarding to be learned and friendships to be reignited—and a family to be repaired, but that’s a more complicated process. Farrant offers a story that is a mix of madcap fun and heartfelt emotion. The characters, adults and children, are flat-out wonderful, fully realized, and unique. The movie “scripts” that frame some of the chapters can distract, but the narrative quickly returns to Blue’s voice, which captures events better than video. Grades 5-8. --Ilene Cooper

Unpredictable, quick, and yet believable, After Iris is a simply wonderful contemporary story. Bluebell “Blue” Gadsby had a twin, once. At first, that memory seems to define her, what little of her 12 year-old self we see. She’s more involved in watching others–and we get a great study of her teenage sister and younger siblings (and pets) and a great amount of her speculation about her often-absent parents.

Although the premise seems sad, in fact, there’s a lot going on. Daily life and interactions have taken over and amazing stuff seems to happen every minute. As the children are largely in their London home, with the one square of backyard, you might sit back and times and wonder how much can really happen.

The truth is, the action never stops. I loved Blue, the main character’s voice–her interest in and awareness of other people. She didn’t need a ‘babysitters,’ yet still warmed up to the au pair straightaway. He let her know that every family had a ‘quiet kid,’ and its okay to be that kid.

Their are arguments, unexpected develops, the unexpected first love interest, jealousy, and the mystery of specific family issues on-going, the whole time. Readers will identify with Blue, and if you aren’t a kid, you’ll remember thinking like a kid…you’ll remember friendships found…and lost, and what it is to be ‘in’ or ‘out’ at school.

Farrant handles the issues of loss and memory with sensitivity but also, with a refreshing reality. Every moment is not about Iris, but her absence is felt.

After Iris is probably the best thing I’ve read since back when Judy Blume’s Margaret wrote for that age group… 5 stars, and put it on the must read list for any middle-grade reader.

A Book and a Hug: After Iris

Ever since the death of her twin sister, twelve year old Bluebell’s life has been in disarray. With her trusty video camera, Blue captures the aftermath of the Gadsby family life in an alternating combination of short film clips and diary entries. Blue is most comfortable when she can disappear behind the camera, and she has made invisibility an artform in the halls of her school.

Despite her quiet existence, though, Blue’s world is nevertheless filled with a fascinating array of characters like dramatic pink-haired sister Flora, a family of white rats, pesky little sibs Twig and Jasmine, and prickly Bosnian au pair Zoran. Most interesting to Blue, though, is the sudden addition of a next-door neighbor. Specifically, a very cute next-door neighbor named Joss who seems to actually notice and like her.

Over time, Blue gets to remember what it feels like to be noticed, to learn how to be her own person even with the jarring absence of Iris. After Iris is a sympathetic story with a lot of humor and heart that tackles realistic issues in a thoughtful way. Unique and interesting book on screw exrusion

This is a very unique and interesting book on screw exrusion of polymers, and contains many suggestive observations not only on melting but also on solid conveying, metering etc. of extruders.

Chung model, different from other models, has been developed based on experimental results by a unique simulative apparatus called "screw simulator" and theoretical studies of them. There were discussions about the adequacy of applying the knowledge from the screw simulator to real single screw extruders. Chung persevered in his research, and published his achievements in book form.

It forced the survivors to create new strategies for survival, and religious rituals were foremost among them. Fundamentally, Rossano writes, religion is a way for humans to relate to each other and the world around them--and, in the grim struggles of prehistory, it offered significant survival and reproductive advantages. It emerged as our ancestors' first health care system, and a critical part of that health care system was social support. Religious groups tended to be far more cohesive, which gave them a competitive advantage over non-religious groups, and enabled them to conquer the globe.

Rather than focusing on one aspect of religion, as many theorists do, Rossano offers an all-encompassing approach that is rich with surprises, insights, and provocative conclusions.

Best Book on This Subject I have Read

Probably the best and most informative book I have ever read concerning this subject. I particularly liked the way he progressed from the beginnings of rituals, how they began, how these conclusions were arrived at by comparing traditional hunter gathers and other primates types of rituals, through shamanism and finally arriving at supernatural agents.

One Quibble. Mr. Rossano, like many modern authors, have begun to use she in place of he when describing a group or a representative of a group. Traditional English language uses the word he for this sort of description. Using she is, in my mind, a form of political correctness. This always starts me wondering if any of the authors who write this way allow political correctness to alter some of there findings.

Good; not the last word of course.

I read this book from my local library, but if you are interested in the ancestral roots of religion it might be a good purchase. It doesn’t say much about the creation more modern religions as we know them (Hinduism, Buddhism Judaism, Christianity, Islam). What this book does best is suggest an early starting point for religion, about 70,000 year ago in Africa, and a point at which it flourishes: 30,000 years ago in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic. The author contends that shamanistic ritual is one of the early elements of religion, and that religion is essentially about relationships and a cohesive group morality and behavior. The book cannot account for or describe everything; it is best treated as one plausible theory, and not the definitive last word on religion. Certainly much more needs to be said about that, but overall as possible or even plausible account of how religion may have begun, it sheds some useful light.

A good book with a few flaws

I think the author is basically correct in his major points. At times though, unless I am interpreting some of his statements incorrectly, there may be some logical flaws. For example, at one point says that ritual behavior was the very mechanism by which we acquired our uniquely human capacity for symbolic thought; he points to ritual that exists in the animal kingdom, which has no symbolic content, but I saw no explanation why this would trigger symbolic capacity for humans. Separately, I personally prefer books that rely less on very recent research, especially when only a single study is involved, since it often takes a while for flawed research studies to be "de-bunked."

Brittany, again, does a wonderful job of simply laying out the facts. It's unfortunate that the tone of IC is so negative on the internet. I am deeply grateful for western medicine but unfortunately IC is a disease that you must approach holistically - there is no magic pill. Western medicine cannot help you for this "chronic disease" and Brittney, like many other natraupathic advocates, lay out exactly how to do that through nutrition, ph balance (specifically the importance of alkalinity), yeast control, exercise, gut healing, mentality/meditation and allergies. Anyone, myself included, who has truly healed from IC and has taken this route of self discovery, open mindedness, strong desire to get better, drastic lifestyle changes and MANY ups and downs. But it is worth it, you will get there eventually! Brittany is not only hopeful and encouraging in her book but extremely knowledgable and good at relaying the information. I urge you to give her youtube videos a listen and read her book. There is hope, IC IS curable and you WILL get your life back. Waste of money if you've got interstitial cystitis

I've got interstitial cystitis and it's a very serious medical condition. I think this book offers nothing truly useful for healing this condition at all (other than basic diet changes). She focuses on emotional healing, detox and self love for much of the book. For anyone who has IC you'll probably know that being told to love yourself more is difficult to read when you're in pain...The recipes include known IC flare triggers (tomatoes and green apples) which in my view is dangerous. If you just want a book about healthy eating it might be okay - but I got nothing out of it that was new or helpful for healing my IC. If you've got IC - there's more accurate, research based free information from doctors and women who suffer from the condition at the interstitial cystitis network website ic-network.com - sorry this is such a negative review but I really feel like I wasted my money

Don't read on a tablet.

(Please note that I am reviewing the Kindle version, although the review says I'm reviewing the paperback.)

I've only been through the first 20 pages so far and will write a full review after finishing the book. The first point I want to make is that this book is no good on a tablet (at least, on a 7" Android tablet). The formatting is inconsistent and the formulas are frequently (but not always!) small graphics that can't be scaled. I won't complain about this because it was noted that this book was optimized for large screens. On a laptop it looks perfect. Expect to read the Kindle version of this book on a computer.

I can say this much so far. The book starts out from a totally practical, "here is why you should care" perspective, and I love it. Most linear algebra books and courses begin by leaping straight into some severely abstract things. (Strang's course is an example.) This book begins with real-world problems, and then uses basic algebra to tackle them. Only after having gone through this is the concept of a matrix introduced, and the reason for introducing it is to demonstrate an easier, faster, more reliable way to solve the real-world problem that was approached with algebra.

I took an online course in programming linear algebra in python, and so it suffered from two problems from the perspective of a linear algebra newbie, 1) the real focus was on programming, not linear algebra and 2) the presentation of linear algebra was as abstract as you can possibly be. If I had gone through just the first 20 pages of this book first, so much would have been clear to me and the course would have been so much easier.

UPDATE: I'm now about 1/3 of the way through the book. So far, it's still the single best resource I've seen for learning linear algebra. It does get abstract and confusing at times, and this is taking into account that I've worked with several other resources, including an online course, another book, and a lot of Khan Academy videos. If you're brand new to linear algebra, the first chapter might seem fairly easy, but then it's going to get rough.

Nevertheless, although it's slow going for me, I have generally been able to figure out what the text was getting at. There are a few points so far that have left me puzzled. I haven't yet looked at the detailed answers to all of the exercises yet, so those may help.

UPDATE 2: I got a Paperwhite e-reader recently and I spent some time paging through this book on that. This was a by no means comprehensive analysis, but it appeared that everything was at least legible on the Paperwhite. Some of the tables had some fairly small text, but nothing I couldn't read. So it's probably feasible to read this on a Paperwhite.

probably the best book in linear algebra

I've read other books on linear algebra such as those from Strang but none of them are as good as this one. The topics are presented in a very organized and understandable way. I also love that the author provides a detailed solutions to all the exercises. It was very helpful.

Well worth it

I used it in conjunction with my other materials for a L.A course. I actually prefer this to the other text, especially as the order of presentation seems more sensible. Also, if you have trouble with proofs, this book does an *amazing* job of breaking proofs down. It even discusses the strategies chosen. If you're used to reading proofs, that can sometimes seem a little wordy, but since many (most?) students struggle with proofs I admire the integration of the technique of proofs along side the proofs.

I got it as a Kindle doc, and as other users have noted it's challenging on a Kindle reader due to scaling issues. It's more an issue of having the wrong instrument for the text than a problem with the text. I used my full sized tablet, and that's where it shines. I recommend it highly!

Great resource for new trustees

Well written in an easy to read format that presents the basic information that is important for new trustees. Every new trustee should read this. Even if you know most of the content of this book, there is likely at least one topic where you could use a refresher or where you didn't realize you were lacking knowledge.
