For thirty-three years and through three editions, Bass & Stogdill's Handbook of Leadership has been the indispensable bible for every serious student of leadership. Since the third edition came out in 1990, the field of leadership has expanded by an order of magnitude. This completely revised and updated fourth edition reflects the growth and changes in the study of leadership over the past seventeen years, with new chapters on transformational leadership, ethics, presidential leadership, and executive leadership. Throughout the Handbook, the contributions from cognitive social psychology and the social, political, communications, and administrative sciences have been expanded.

As in the third edition, Bernard Bass begins with a consideration of the definitions and concepts used, and a brief review of some of the betterknown theories. Professor Bass then focuses on the personal traits, tendencies, attributes, and values of leaders and the knowledge, intellectual competence, and technical skills required for leadership. Next he looks at leaders' socioemotional talents and interpersonal competencies, and the differences in these characteristics in leaders who are imbued with ideologies, especially authoritarianism, Machiavellianism, and self-aggrandizement. A fuller examination of the values, needs, and satisfactions of leaders follows, and singled out for special attention are competitiveness and the preferences for taking risks. In his chapters on personal characteristics, Bass examines the esteem that others generally accord to leaders as a consequence of the leaders' personalities.

The many theoretical and research developments about charisma over the past thirty years are crucial and are explored here in depth. Bass has continued to develop his theory of transformational leadership -- the paradigm of the last twenty years -- and he details how it makes possible the inclusion of a much wider range of phenomena than when theory and modeling are limited to reinforcement strategies. He also details the new incarnations of transformational leadership since the last edition.

Bass has greatly expanded his consideration of women and racial minorities, both of whom are increasingly taking on leadership roles.

About the Author
Dr. Bernard M. Bass was Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the School of Management at Binghamton University and director of the Center for Leadership studies. Since 1946, he has published more than four hundred journal articles and twenty-six books concentrating on leadership, behavior, and international management. Dr. Bass has consulted and conducted training for many of the Fortune 500 firms and conducted workshops in more than forty countries. He was founding editor of The Leadership Quarterly.

The Most Comprehensive Leadership Book Ever!

This is a brand new, updated version of Stogill's and Bass's handbook which was last updated in 1990. I purchased it because Ron Riggio and Ruth Bass talked about it at ILA Conferenc in November 2008, just prior to the release of the book. This was the last publication that Bernard Bass was in progress writing/editing before he passed away in late 2007. Also, although Ruth Bass worked along side Bernard Bass with much of his research, I believe this is the first publication which includes her as author/editor. It is truly a treasure -- chocked full of research which masters and doctoral students can use for dissertations, including gender, diversity, conflict, power, the "new" charisma and leadership, you name it! There is a new section on Global Leadership which I've found to be very useful for a Global Leadership class since it incorporates research which has taken place since the GLOBE study.

Bass Leadership Handbook

I bought this book for a graduate student in Leadership who was doing his research paper on leadership in the U.S. He had some of the more current information, but he said this book was exactly what he was missing in learning about the foundations of leadership.

Also included are Wesley’s interpretation of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, his opinion on how to appropriately view miracles and the final word from Wesley on whether or not he had the gift of tongues.

Was Wesley a Charismatic?

The Wesleyan way is a middle ground between rationalism and fanaticism. We believe in both the form and the power; in both a clear mind and the warm heart. All too often, however, teaching on spiritual warfare has become the domain of extremists.

Daniel Jennings has compiled from John Wesley's Journal the primary accounts of his encounters with the supernatural. Jennings has divided this material into the following categories: demonic cases, miraculous healings, slain in the Spirit, holy laughter, the gift of tongues, unusual manifestations of the Spirit, the gift of prophecy, visions and dreams, divine retribution, experiences with angels, and supernatural answers to prayer.

Jennings wrote me, "The Wesley I discovered in my research was a man who fell between dead liberalism which denies all miracles and Charismatic emotionalism which accepts anything that seems miraculous as being real. He was simply a man who believed that God had always worked miracles."

It becomes evident from the material which Jennings has gathered that Wesley neither sought nor denied the supernatural. Nor did Wesley regard all supernatural phenomenon as necessarily from God. He warned against regarding extraordinary circumstances as essential to the inward work and against condemning them altogether as if they were a hindrance to God's work. While God worked many miracles through Wesley's ministry, yet Wesley did not claim to have supernatural, apostolic-like gifts. His emphasis was upon preaching the Word and all things were to be tried by the written Word. Thus, Wesley was neither a cessationist nor a charismatic. Jennings documents the fact that Wesley never spoke in tongues nor did he teach that tongues were the evidence of the baptism with the Holy Spirit. In fact Jennings includes a helpful chapter summarizing Wesley's teaching which equated the baptism with the Spirit with regeneration.

The teaching and influence of John Wesley have become something of an undefined banner, with various segments of Church each claiming Wesley was or would have been sympathetic to their emphasis. By relying on the primary words of Wesley himself, Jennings has demonstrated that the emphasis of early Methodism concerning the supernatural was a balance which has largely been lost and which needs to be recovered.

John Wesley and Spiritual Gifts

Given that we are in a world where what we know as "gifts of the Spirit", 1 Cor 12:4 ff, are vital to the persecuted church, central to and often overcooked in charismatic churches, and regarded as suspect or at least suppressed by many established churches, it is refreshing when a researcher goes back and searches the Journals of the 18th Century evangelist, John Wesley for what he may have personally recorded as his experiences and understanding of the subject.

John an ordained minister of the Church of England became progressively freed from it's strictures by a life where he sought after God's righteousness, a life bound to and tested by the Scriptures yet strengthened by his own experiences and the experiences of others of what are known as "spiritual gifts". Progressively Wesley developed a deep need to share the Gospel with others, eventually resulting in the foundation of the Methodist Church.

This book is a referenced and categorized collection of direct quotes from the fourteen volumes of Wesley's Journals, with limited but valuable context setting comments from the Author.
It is refreshingly cautious in the conclusions drawn by the author and Wesley himself.
I would recommend it to all who seek a deeper understanding of the "gifts of the Spirit" .

It also includes mathematical treatment of ultrasonic transit time flowmeters. A method to find the approximate axis of heart and image reconstruction in a CT scan is explained. The section on MRI has been simplified for better understanding, and a new section on Positron Emission Tomography (PET), has been introduced.

About the Author
Cheryl R. Shrock recently retired as Professor and Chairperson of Computer Aided Design at Orange Coast College (CA) where she had taught since 1990.  She is an Autodesk® registered author. Previous to teaching, she owned and operated a commercial product and machine design company, using CAD to create and document designs. This book draws upon both her teaching and industry experience.

Steve Heather has 30-plus years of experience as a practicing mechanical engineer and has taught AutoCAD to engineering and architectural students at the college level. He is an authorized AutoCAD beta tester and a member of AutoCAD Connected Desktop Customer Council.
