Makes an excellent coaster!
By CUArch student
Absolutely the biggest waste of money I ever spent on a textbook in my undergraduate career. This book is completely incoherent and strewn with errors. (i.e. Forgets to actually GIVE givens countless times, leaving the reader completely lost while calculating a problem.) I could continue to complain, but to be brief, this book is useless.
You're probably not considering buying this over priced piece of firewood unless you're required to because you're unfortunately taking Hollee's class. My advice would be to split the cost and share the book with a few classmates. The only thing you need the book for is to find the diagrams used for homework problems. (She could easily put them in her slideshows, but she doesn't so that you are forced to buy her book.) Good luck! This class will make you want to seriously injure someone.

If fate sent you an email, would you answer?

When teenage movie star Graham Larkin accidentally sends small town girl Ellie O'Neill an email about his pet pig, the two seventeen-year-olds strike up a witty and unforgettable correspondence, discussing everything under the sun, except for their names or backgrounds.

Then Graham finds out that Ellie's Maine hometown is the perfect location for his latest film, and he decides to take their relationship from online to in-person. But can a star as famous as Graham really start a relationship with an ordinary girl like Ellie? And why does Ellie want to avoid the media's spotlight at all costs?

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-This well-crafted, character-driven love story opens with an endearing prologue told in emails. When 16-year-old Ellie O'Neill accidentally starts an exchange with a stranger, she doesn't expect their virtual conversations to turn into a romance. But over the course of a few months, that's exactly what happens. Ellie doesn't know the boy's name until he shows up on her doorstep. He's Graham Larkin, a famous movie star whose next film just happens to be shooting in her quiet Maine town. While most of the girls are dying to be in her shoes, she has reservations. Ellie is the illegitimate daughter of a prominent politician, and her mom moved them to escape the unrelenting media. Now they struggle financially in order to maintain their privacy. Graham's life is anything but private. However, though he is handsome and wealthy, the teen is also lonely and uninspired. His parents, uncomfortable with his fame, choose to distance themselves from him, while his controlling manager wants Graham to date his beautiful costar for the good publicity. Despite those obstacles, Ellie and Graham sustain a sweet and genuine romance. Their chemistry is undeniable, and readers will wonder about their love story long after the last page. An excellent recommendation for fans of Maureen Johnson.-Kimberly Garnick Giarratano, Rockaway Township Public Library, NJα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
When “GDL” gets an e-mail address wrong, the surprise recipient, “EONeill,” decides to reply. The two develop a deep and intimate rapport despite guarding their true identities. But down-to-earth movie star Graham Larkin is certain that Ellie is someone special, and he lobbies to shoot his new movie in “the middle of nowhere, Maine,” Ellie’s hometown. Ellie is shocked to learn who Graham is, and she is anything but thrilled by the prospect of dating a teen heartthrob. Meanwhile, the paparazzi trailing Graham threaten to upturn the quiet, carefully constructed life Ellie and her mother have nurtured to smooth over a high-profile secret. The shared third-person narration lends a quiet insight into these two likable characters whose histories and flaws are relatable and fully fleshed out. The blend of celebrity glitz and small-town coziness gives this summer love story a pleasant frame, and it will leave readers wishing for more time with this endearing couple as the sun rises on their last morning together. Grades 8-11. --Heather Booth

Beautiful Writing, Underwhelming Story
By Andrea T
This is What Happy Looks Like was surprising, to me. I read a review yesterday by Jen YA Romantics, that described it as a mix of You've Got Mail, Notting Hill, and What a Girl Wants. That's about as accurate of a description as I could ever hope to come up with.

What was surprising for me about This is What Happy Looks Like is that it was, hmm... underwhelming. Don't get me wrong, it was sweet, and charming. I liked the characters, but there was not a lot to keep me hooked. In fact, I put this down for three days because I got swept away in another series that was full of fun and passion and angst, highs and lows. And in comparison, this was just nice.

Smith is obviously an extremely talented author. I absolutely adored The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. I raved about it to all my friends for months, and credit it with making me love a boy named Oliver. Maybe that has caused me to judge this book a little too much. And though I liked Ellie and Graham, their portrayals were just sort of flat. I understood were they were coming from with their feelings and questions about their lives, but they didn't feel fully developed. I almost felt a true attachment to them and their story at certain points, the epic was just within reach, but then the story would move along and the feeling went away. Also, I would have like a least a smidge more resolution in the ending.

This Is What Happy Looks Like was a good, if underwhelming, story. I did like it, but will also say that I never fell in love with it. And I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it, but I would also say to maybe be prepared to not be swept away.

THIS IS WHAT AMAZING LOOKS LIKE!!!
By Fly to the Sky
So to start off, I just want to put it out there that I am NOT a big fan of contemporaries. I mean there are a few authors in that category that I will read, but normally I'll stick to the more Sci-Fi and Fantasy aspects. Well Jennifer E. Smith is one of those authors I can't get enough of. A few months ago when I read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, I fell in love with her writing style. So when I heard that she had a new book coming out with an amazing premise, I just had to pre-order it. And then I had to stay up until four in the morning to read it. (yeah, I'm the kind of person who does that, BUT only if I don't have school.) My point is This is What Happy Looks Like does not disappoint.

THE PROS

1.) The E-mails. The e-mails were funny and it was a great concept, although it might have made a bit more sense if they were texts. (More people text than use e-mail.)

2.) Dual POV. In The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, there was only Hadley's perspective, but in this book, both Ellie and Graham get there say.

3.) Ellie and Graham. I just loved bot of them. They come off as really shy around each other and it's really cute. I love Ellie's back story and why she has a reason for not wanting to be with Graham. So many times you read a book and the main characters are kept apart for stupid reasons, but here, it made sense.

4.) Graham's pig Wilbur.... You never actually get to meet him. :'( But I did think Graham's relationship with his pig was insanely sweet!

5.) The cover! I just LOVE the cover. It's just so pretty.

6.) Jennifer E. Smith's writing style. I've already said this, but I just love how she writes the story, she actually makes you feel connected.

7.) I loved the beginning. It was so funny how Graham was so let down about "Ellie" because the whole time I sat there laughing and thinking, "I know something you don't!!'

8.) I loved Graham and Ellie's jokes, like the whoopie pie one and also there funny stories. =D

THE CONS

1.) I would have liked to see more of the E-mails between Graham and Ellie before the author actually introduced them into the book.

OVERALL

In all, I really enjoyed this book. Jennifer E. Smith somehow manages to make her novels feel so real, like what is happening in them is totally possible. I though this book was a fantastic read.

WOULD I READ THIS BOOK: YES!!!!!!!
WOULD I BUY THIS BOOK: NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!!!
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK: To lovers of contemporaries or for people looking for a light funny read.

WILL I READ MORE BY THIS AUTHOR: YES!!!

Angieville: THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE
By Angela Thompson
Jennifer E. Smith gets the cutest covers in the world, doesn't she? I picked up The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight almost entirely on the merits of its adorable cover alone. And when I saw the cover for THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE, I immediately began daydreaming about how happy they would look next to each other on my shelves--an activity I engage in all too often when it comes to books of a feather. And given how much I loved The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, I felt that my feelings for her next novel were sort of a foregone conclusion. Especially when you take into account the much-billed You've Got Mail meets Notting Hill premise. I ask you--who can resist the wild potential of that setup? No one. That is who. But one of the things I loved the most about The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight was how it packed so much more of a punch that its name or cover suggested. It was deeper and wider than its slim-ish page count and 24-hour time period foretold. I don't think I realized going into this one how much I was counting on the same thing being true of it.

Ellie O'Neill and Graham Larkin don't know each other at all. Ellie is the daughter of an ex-waitress turned shop owner in the backwoods town of Henley, Maine. Graham is an all American kid turned movie star from California. The two have nothing at all in common (except perhaps a love for Charlotte's Web) until Graham mistypes a single email address, hits send, and it winds up in Ellie's inbox way on the other side of the country. His misplaced missive ignites what evolves into a lively correspondence in which the two teenagers exchange jokes, detail their day-to-day goings on, their hopes, their dreams, and ruminate on what "happy" looks like. Neither of them quite realize how much the burgeoning virtual friendship means to them until the location for Graham's upcoming rom-com falls through, and he finds himself suggesting Henley as a possible alternative. And with that one act, he somewhat wittingly, somewhat unwittingly sets the two of them on a collision course. The results are both enlightening and unexpectedly fraught as Graham finds a kind of home in the most unlikely of places and Ellie grapples with a secret she promised never to tell. Soon Graham's time in Henley will be up. And where will they go from there?

THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE has a great deal of charm going for it. Graham and Ellie are eminently likable. The lovable happenstance of their "meeting" is difficult to resist. And the small-town Maine setting is one I've enjoyed in the past and that is once again used to great effect here. Smith's writing is capable and occasionally lovely, if not as consistently so as it was in The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. One of the lovelier observations here:

"No matter how long it's been or how far you've drifted, no matter how unknowable you might be, there were at least two people in the world whose job it was to see you, to find you, to recognize you and reel you back in. No matter what."

I feel that one of Jennifer E. Smith's real strengths is the upfront, sensitive way in which she depicts families. Her characters' romantic entanglements are not resolved in place of their familial relationships, but as a result of their dealing with them first. Sometimes the one unfolds along with the other, and often they help one another work through their baggage. What I'm saying is their priorities are generally in order, and I dig that about Smith's characters (and her books). Like Hadley, Ellie struggles with father issues. These issues are, in fact, meant to be pivotal to the story. But where Hadley's felt incredibly real and meaningful to me, Ellie's rarely cross the border from the tepid into the profound. So when the plot takes a turn to explore that vein, I felt ambivalent when I should have been riveted. As for Ellie and Graham, I liked them all right. But I never truly fell for them in a way that made me unable to look away. They are both good people. They're good and they're well-intentioned and they're dedicated to achieving their goals for the future. I was happy that they found one another. I wanted them to find a way to be together. I just didn't feel compelled to stick around and watch it happen. They "looked" like happy to me, if you will, but they failed to inspire the real emotion behind the exterior. In the end, THIS IS WHAT HAPPY LOOKS LIKE has all the key elements of a competent, if somewhat bland romantic comedy, but it lacks that certain spark that makes it a keeper.

Review
Ghastly in its purist sense; read it in the kitchen if you dare DAILY TELEGRAPH Celebratory in tone, The Taste of a Man is also a heartfelt, if unrepentant confession ... Drakulic does not disappoint NEW STATESMAN It is a tribute to Drakulic's senstivity that we emerge from the desperate tale with a real feeling of hope. THE TIMES Drakulic does not permit ignorance. The tale she tells is as bad as it gets... It isn't a hopeful tale, but it is a necessary one. Drakulic has taken the reader to places where CNN will never reach: she teaches lessons in horror and makes the unimaginable into something everyday. She does, however, have the wisdom to give hope and to leave S with something like a better ending. SCOTSMAN A disturbingly insightful novel of love gone wrong ... gruesome and highly accomplished Time Out

The real horror of the Bosnia War
By R. Braaksma
I found this book in the public library today, and almost finished it already. It's one of those books you can read in one session.

It's about a young bosnian muslim woman, S.. She works in a school in a little bosnian village, when the Serbs come and deport her to a rape-camp, along with other women from her village. Somehow, she makes it to survive all this and she ends up in Zagreb/Croatia - in freedom.

But there she finds out that she's pregnant - from one of those countless men who raped her in the camp.

Drakulic succeeded to draw the atmosphere in such a camp, that you almost feel the fear of drunken soldiers coming to rape you.

It's a shocking book, one that doesn't allow you to put it away anymore. You need strong nerves to read this book, but after you read it, you'll understand the suffering of the women during the Bosnia-war much better.

It's really a book I'd recommend to everybody.

Horrifyingly, brutally honest and all the more compelling for being so
By keetmom
Imagine your worst nightmare and waking up to find out that it had suddenly come true. In an instant you lose everything without warning - your home, your possessions, your identity and your value as a human being. This is what happened to thousands of innocent civilians at the hands of Serbian militia during the war in Bosnia where murder and brutality on the most horrific scale became commonplace. In an extra-ordinary piece of writing Slavenka Drakulic takes you through the most frightening experiences of a young Croat-speaking teacher, recounting both her physical sufferings as well as her inner struggles to preserve some fragments of humanity to avoid descending into the moral equivalent of her persecutors as a vessel of hate. "As if I am not there" is a devastating read, but in relaying all the horror Drakulic never oversteps the boundary into gratuitous shock and her survivor's tale is all the more moving for that. The result is an overpowering, unforgettable, compelling and essential read.

Reviews

"The Billionaire Book Club: What the Rich Are Reading This Summer" - Wall Street Journal, 2010

"McDang is a fierce proponent of teaching cooking through science as opposed to the rote memorization of ingredients and procedure. His first English-language book, it focuses not on the formative years of his life in the palace but what he believes to be the formative principles of Thai cuisine." -CNNGo.com, 2010

"The book aims not only to educate people around the world about Thai food but also to deliver the pride of the Thai people in their cooking culture." -Bangkok Post, 2010

"Chef McDang is a household name in Bangkok; he's the Thai equivalent of Britain's Gordon Ramsay (but far more courteous) or Australia's Neil Perry" -The Australian, Sian Powell, 2009

Review for Chef McDang's latest book
By magnolia
Among the numerous cookbooks we have (both Thai and non-Thai food), this is one of the best. Not only are the recipes and instructions easy to follow, but the concepts and principles of Thai cooking and more importantly eating are clearly spelled out. I love the history of Thai cooking, where you can see whether a dish is indigenously Thai or influenced by western culinaries, e.g. the Portugese. I love how Chef McDang explains why Thais eat with fork and spoon. Living in America, it's very humorous when we sometimes go to Thai restaurant and see non-Thais eat Thai food with chopsticks. (They are really trying!) I would recommend this book to anybody. My 15 year old daughter uses it ALL THE TIME and we love the results. Yum yum. Aroi mak. (Very delicious, in Thai.)

Top Shelf Thai!

Chef McDang's cookbook is a superb entree to learning the principles of Thai cooking. Chef McDang captures the essence of authentic Thai cuisine without pretension or over-simplification. The recipes are not overly complicated and put fabulous Thai dishes within reach of even novices like myself. Exquisite photography and beautiful narrative, this cookbook is a masterful tribute to the rich history and culture of Thai Cuisine.

Not yet kitchen-tested, but impressive read
By Zora O'Neill
This cookbook won me over just with the nifty chart in the back that shows which essential ingredients go in various types of Thai food: curries, salads, etc. I also own David Thompson's books, which I love for their thoroughness, but they are simply overwhelming. Just reading through Chef McDang's book quickly, I feel like the basic principles stand out far better than they do in Thompson's work.

As the review header says, I haven't actually cooked any recipes yet from the book, so I suppose there's still room for disaster. But if a book teaches you the principles well, as I feel like this one is well on the way to doing for me, then the recipes are almost beside the point.

Duty Honor Sacrifice, by Ralph Christopher

"For two-thousand years, the Chinese, French, Japanese and Republic of Vietnam forces tried to pacify the Mekong Delta and failed. The United States Ninth Infantry Division, and U.S. Naval Forces of Vietnam, did it in a little over three years, but at a high cost.

They fought for freedom, they fought with honor, but in the end they fought for each other.

Solid and factual. Worth reading
By VietVet
The first two thirds of this book read in a clipped understated manner; "just the facts". I thoroughly enjoyed the remainder which presented a significant amount or data relating to what happened post U.S. Withdrawal. Overall, this is worth reading

Being a Brown Water Sailor in the Vietnam War: A Strange Land With Unknown Dangers Striking at Any Time.
By Bernie Weisz
Ralph Christopher has done it again! Where his first blockbuster book “River Rats’ left off, "Duty Honor Sacrifice" picks up and then some. This book has many fascinating anecdotes of the Vietnam War while at the same time really delves into the historical information concerning the U.S. Navy's endeavors to take the fight to the enemy in the murky backwaters of the Mekong Delta. All the major operations from 1965 to the final U.S. pullout are analyzed, as well as the crafts, their attributes and functions are discussed. Needless to say, despite the Vietnam War being close to fifty years ago, Christopher succinctly mentions that the reason he wrote this book was to point out that other Vietnam Veterans that are still with us today will never forget the silent heroes of the past and that the ones that died will somehow know that they are not nor ever will be forgotten until the last Vietnam Veteran is gone. This book is Christopher's small way of letting the public know that it meant something very special to those that answered the call in that forgotten place called South Vietnam and survived, and always will. Aside from the naval war being thoroughly discussed, the author drives the point home that those that served did not go off to kill, but rather to stop communist aggression. Yet there is much pain and anger among Vietnam Veterans in light of the disgraceful welcome home they received. Christopher insists that unlike both World War One and Two, Vietnam Veterans apologize for nothing, only lamenting that they were not allowed by our government to finish the job or bring world peace as every previous generation of U.S. Veterans has tried to do.

Brown Water Sailors or “River Rats” are what navy personnel were called who operated in the waterways of the southernmost part of South Vietnam, particularly the Mekong Delta and its backwaters. By using particularly suited river patrol boats and their crews, American naval forces were tasked with the difficult mission of keeping the fledgling democratic of South Vietnam's offshore waters, rivers and canals free so that the Viet Cong Communists could not smuggle munitions or troops into the south as well as protect the indigenous farmers and fisherman's abilities to move safely and bring their products of fish, rice and fruit to their markets without enemy intimidation or seizure. Aside from robbing and taxing locals, the VC would abduct and impress young men to serve in their army; objection would be met by execution at the hands of these brutal communists. Yet why now are Vietnam Veterans such as Christopher speaking out? The author makes it known that in the early, mid and late 1970’s, Vietnam Veterans were criticized, called names such as “losers, psychopathic baby killers and drug addicts,” totally untrue monikers. Being too hard to explain, Vietnam Veterans simply stopped talking about their experiences. In the 1980’s distorted movies such as “Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter and Hamburger Hill” came out showing anything but the real war that was fought. It was only in the 1990’s and onwards that Vietnam Veterans or the military are no longer condescended with the understanding that as with today’s terrorists in the Middle East who use similar tactics to the ones employed in Southeast Asia during the war, the men that served in Vietnam were in a bad situation, fighting a brutal, heartless enemy.

“Duty Honor Sacrifice” explains how the U.S. Navy endeavored to halt the flow of communist arms and supplies by sea and 1,200 miles of South Vietnamese coastline, developing a security system of coordinated surveillance and security called “Operation Market Time.” Similarly, river patrol boats were devised for patrols in the Mekong Delta, which would come to be known as “Operation Game Warden.” Riverine ships were produced by American ingenuity for this purpose such as “Swift Boats, PBR’s (Patrol Boat River), Monitors, Tango’s Strike Assault Boats (STAB’s) Landing Ship Docks, YRBM’s (Yard, Repair, Berthing and Maintenance) et al. As the war progressed, American naval assault operations were needed to stop the flow of insurgents and equipment infiltrating into South Vietnam from supposedly neutral Cambodia. Combined operations of naval task forces were launched for this purpose, an operation that was dubbed “Sea Lords” (Southeast Asia Lake, Ocean, River and Delta Strategy). The aforementioned operations as well as many others are thoroughly recounted by Christopher, all pointing out that prior to and during then President Nixon’s plan to turn the war over to the South Vietnamese (called “Vietnamization) America was winning the naval war. A superb description is included as to how the Navy and Army (particularly the 9th Infantry Division) combined to launch coastal river landings to place boots on the ground and take the fight directly to the enemy. Rules of engagement, methods of attack as well as the morale of the Brown Water Sailors are all discussed. The heroics of both naval helicopter attack units known as “Seawolves” and aerial attack units of the “Black Ponies” who flew their OV-10 Bronco’s are covered.

The pilots of these aircraft distinguished themselves by flying down and dirty, low and slow over the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army, killing more enemy and saving more allies with close-air support during the years they saw action than all the other naval air squadrons combined. Christopher points out that after the Tet Offensive of 1968, there were drafted troops arriving in Vietnam with the attitude that they were not going to die for a war no one at home cared about and with the phased pullout and Vietnamization, the conflict would be over soon. The gap between fresh troops and senior noncommissioned officers widened with many refusing to perform their duties or go out on patrol. Despite America’s process of process of turning over our war machines to the South Vietnamese, they didn't seem interested in winning either. All these factors and more led to the decline of troop morale with domestic media showing people protesting, burning their draft cards, daily American “Killed in Action” reports and atrocities such as the “My Lai Massacre over exaggerated. On that Ralph Christopher laments that this was the first time our country had ever fought a war which was not designed for us to win but rather to support the South Vietnamese so they could win, which they didn’t….reminding him of what is going on today in Afghanistan and Iraq. Regardless, this is an absolute must read, a little known account of American bravery, heroism and savage combat in the swamps, canals and coastlines of South Vietnam that must never be forgotten!

Excellent and fair view of the War
By Sam Eaton
In the interest of fairness, both my wife Bac and I are acknowledged in this book. Also as Ralph points out, Bac and I mostly live in Viet Nam these days.

Ralph does something that is both interesting and difficult. He gives a very fair and balanced view of the history of Viet Nam and of the American involvement in Viet Nam, while at the same time highlighting the Honor and Sacrifice of American sailors and soldiers who did their duty. My only regret is that Ralph did not footnote the extensive research and source material involved in this book.

Ralph's stories are great. Ralph's summation of the history can only offend the most Liberal Europeans and Americans. It is not in dispute by anyone I know who served in Viet Nam on either side. As Ralph's view of the American involvement in Viet Nam is very positive, as is mine, I would like to include a couple of links to Vo van Kiet, the recently deceased former Prime Minister of Viet Nam. I think that these links show the current (post 1986 Doi Moi) Vietnamese reexamination of the War and of Viet Nam's desire to right many of the wrongs on their side of the war.

Review
This week we received a copy of First Language English for Cambridge IGCSE and it was 'love at first sight!' It was definitely what we were needing at our school. Thank you very much for your service and the quality of your material! I am going to share it with another head from another school since they are needing the same type of resources. Marcela Logioio, Head of English Primary and Director of Studies in Secondary School - Colegio Rio de la Plata, Argentina Complete First Language has core and extended exercises, and also advice for the student on how to plan and write, along with the self-evaluation at the end of each unit which focuses them on exam skills. The texts are varied and interesting and I like the extension texts at the end of each unit. Also there are plenty of speaking activities which is great. There are some excellent activities on the CD ROM too. My first impression is that the resources are very useful and user friendly - certainly more so than any of the other text books which I've seen for First Language English. Helen Leathem, Secondary English Teacher- St Anne's School, Spain

The Deep Hot Biosphere: The Myth of Fossil Fuels, by Thomas Gold

Suppose someone claimed that we are not running out of petroleum? Or that life on Earth began below the surface of our planet? Or that oil and gas are not "fossil fuels"? Or that if we find extraterrestrial life it is likely to be within, not on, other planets? You might expect to hear statements like these from an author of science fiction. But what if they came from a renowned physicist, an indisputably brilliant scientist who has been called "one of the world's most original minds"? In the The Deep Hot Biosphere, Thomas Gold sets forth truly controversial and astonishing theories about where oil and gas come from, and how they acquire their organic "signatures." The conclusions he reaches in this book might be at first difficult to believe, but they are supported by a growing body of evidence, and by the indisputabel stature and seriousness Gold brings to any scientific enterprise. In this book we see a brilliant and boldly orginal thinker, increasingly a rarity in modern science, as he developes a revolutionary new view about the fundamental workings of our planet. Thomas Gold is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and an Emertius Professor at Cornell University. Regarded as one of the most creative and wide-ranging scientists of his generation, he has taughtat Cambridge University and Harvard, and for 20 years was the Director of the Cornell Center for Radiophysics and Space Research.

From Publishers Weekly
When scientists discovered thermophiles?primitive microorganisms that live in deep seafloor vents and eat hydrocarbons (chemicals like gasoline)?experts assumed the mysterious bugs had little to tell us about ourselves or about the earth's core. Cornell University Professor Emeritus Gold, however, who for 20 years directed the Cornell Center for Radiophysics and Space Research, here proposes the striking theory that "a full functioning... biosphere, feeding on hydrocarbons, exists deep within the earth, and that a primordial source of hydrocarbons lies even deeper." Most scientists think the oil we drill for comes from decomposed prehistoric plants. Gold believes it has been there since the earth's formation, that it supports its own ecosystem far underground and that life there preceded life on the earth's surface. The "deep hot biosphere" hypothesis would explain the thermophiles, the minerals and the oil Swedish drillers found in 1990 under rock where no one expected them. The hot goo and massed gas far under our feet would also explain some mysterious historical earthquakes (notably the New Madrid, Mo., shocker of 1811), and it would tell puzzled geologists why so many oil reserves just happen to sit underneath coal fields. As later chapters explain, if Gold is right, the planet's oil reserves are far larger than policymakers expect, and earthquake-prediction procedures require a shakeup; moreover, astronomers hoping for extraterrestrial contacts might want to stop seeking life on other planets and inquire about life in them.

Review

From the reviews:

"always original, always important, usually controversial, and usually right"
- FROM THE FOREWORD BY FREEMAN DYSON

"an extraordinary theory from one of the world's most original minds."
- NIGEL HAWKES, THE TIMES, LONDON

"The leading supporter of the abiotic theory in the U.S. is Prof. Thomas Gold of Cornell. His 1999 book, The Deep Hot Biosphere (Springer-Verlag) is a thorough discussion of the issues. It is based in part on research financed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Among prominent scientists whose work supports the abiotic theory are Jean Whelan of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Mahlon Kennicutt of Texas A&M University, and J.F Kenny of the Gas Resources Corporation."

"There is much to be said about this important book … . Gold exhibits the irreversible and universal genius that we recognize in Aristotle and Leonardo da Vinci. … The versatility and range of knowledge exhibited is remarkable. … The Deep Hot Biosphere is a highly interesting and important book; it should be required reading for every geology student." (David Deming, Journal of Scientific Exploration, Vol. 17 (2), 2003)

"Thomas Gold is a physicist who is not afraid of controversy. … His big new theory … is that oil and natural gas are produced by geology and chemistry of the hot deep layers below the Earth’s surface … . The book is the best kind of science writing: contentious and passionate, with all the evidence there for you to weigh up." (New Scientist, August, 2001)

Revolutionary science
By Donald B. Siano
This morning's New York Times featured an article "Methane in Deep Earth: A Possible New Source of Energy" reporting on new research that partly confirms the claim in this book-- that the methane deep in the earth's mantle is primordial (not due to decayed buried vegetation) and is the source of petroleum. The article showed how methane can be generated from water and carbonate rock when the applied pressure is equal to that found in the mantle.

Gold's book describes research done largely by Russians and Ukrainians on the origin of oil, which has been shamefully discounted and ignored in the West. The Western dogma, he claims, is just another one of those things that nearly everyone believes, but is wrong.

I love books like this. It opens up a whole new world of important ideas and questions that need to be addressed, and make the scientific dogmatists who have "proved" their hypothesis by superficial reasoning from the most meager of data, coupled with proof by endless repetition, look as foolish as the geologists who rejected continental drift, or the idiots who still revere Freudian psychoanalysis.

Evidence that he presents is pretty convincing and is a good example of how many diverse lines of evidence can make the convergence on the truth inevitable. Many of the pieces of evidence were quite unknown to the formulators of the "fossil fuel" dogma who emphasize the limited reserves available for extraction. The composition of the gas giant planets with their tremendous quantities of methane can be used to plausibly argue for primordial gas on earth as well. The increasing realization among petroleum geologists that at least some petroleum reservoirs are being filled from below is startling news to many readers. The biological "markers" seen in petroleum are introduced by bacteria to petroleum on its migration toward the surface provide an alternative and plausible explanation of the facts. That Ukraine generates a third of its oil from reservoirs below all sedimentary rock is astounding.

As a physicist at the corporate research labs of a major oil company, I've sat through many presentations of petroleum exploration experts with their tables of C13 data, interpreted as signs of age and origins of oil, and I even then recognized the signs of smoke and mirrors. I only wish I'd read Gold earlier...

Gold's book is also concerned with many other aspects of the consequences of the presence of biology deep within the earth that are just as intriguing. That microbes exist deep in the earth and have a life style entirely independent from photosynthetic energy from the sun is an idea that is only now beginning to be accepted by some of the more daring Western petroleum engineers. Russians have known this for more than fifty years. The idea that better earthquake predictions can be made, and that fossil fuel reserves are much greater than publicized in the popular press, are big, important ideas that would have tremendous political impact if true.

I very much enjoyed Gold's style of writing, which is clear and straightforward, and the story he tells is a very important one, deserving of much more attention and research. The book has a gratifying number of illustrations and is well organized. The notes give a good introduction to the scientific literature on the subject, but I think some criticism can be leveled at Gold for writing as though he had been a major discoverer of many of the pieces of evidence, when he is actually playing more of a role as a popularizer for the findings of the Russians and others. But reviewers, and even popularizers, are not to be sneered at. They play an important and honorable role in the progress of science--Gold does an outstanding job here. Well worth reading.

Convincing arguments for a new paradigm
By Steven Zoraster
This is a very well written book. It presents a sequence of inter-related arguments suggesting radical re-thinking of the source of oil and gas on earth, the causes of earthquakes, and the origins of life. The arguments are consistent and to me, with no formal training in chemistry, physics or geology, convincing. What persuaded me most, was the way Gold's arguments tie-in with other research which correlate the discovery of oil and gas deposits with impact craters from asteroids, and many recent reports of new life forms in caves, in rocks, and under the sea. Life forms that thrive independently of solar energy. I have two reasons for giving this book a four star rating, instead of a five star rating. First, geologists I have talked to about the book have presented counter-arguments that might have been foreseen by Gold and answered in this book. (Those arguments have not convinced me Gold is wrong.) Second, the book would have been stronger if Gold had tied in the research I mentioned at the end of the previous paragraph. Still, Gold is only one man! And he writes much better than I do. Buy the book if you are willing to think outside the box.

Turning the World Upside Down
By A Customer
The phrase `paradigm shift' gets thrown around pretty loosely these days, but this book represents the real thing. For many years Thomas Gold has been the prime proponent of a theory that, if true, would change many commonly accepted theories in both geology and biology. In short, he believes that "fossil fuels' are generated be deep, underground methane sources that feed a vast subterranean biosphere of bacteria. If Gold is right, a lot of what we have been teaching for the last century is wrong. This is the kind paradigm shift that, literally, would require that the text books be rewritten. Scientists will not accept it unless the evidence is overwhelming. Gold recognizes this and he supports his theory with a great deal of evidence representing several independent lines of reasoning. In my mind, he succeeds in making his case. I opened the book as a skeptic, but I am now convinced that Gold is probably right. I look forward to watching the new consensus emerge.
