In 2009, BlackBerry controlled half of the smartphone market. Today that number is less than one percent. What went so wrong?

Losing the Signal is a riveting story of a company that toppled global giants before succumbing to the ruthlessly competitive forces of Silicon Valley. This is not a conventional tale of modern business failure by fraud and greed. The rise and fall of BlackBerry reveals the dangerous speed at which innovators race along the information superhighway.

With unprecedented access to key players, senior executives, directors and competitors, Losing the Signal unveils the remarkable rise of a company that started above a bagel store in Ontario. At the heart of the story is an unlikely partnership between a visionary engineer, Mike Lazaridis, and an abrasive Harvard Business school grad, Jim Balsillie. Together, they engineered a pioneering pocket email device that became the tool of choice for presidents and CEOs. The partnership enjoyed only a brief moment on top of the world, however. At the very moment BlackBerry was ranked the world's fastest growing company internal feuds and chaotic growth crippled the company as it faced its gravest test: Apple and Google's entry in to mobile phones.

Expertly told by acclaimed journalists, Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff, this is an entertaining, whirlwind narrative that goes behind the scenes to reveal one of the most compelling business stories of the new century.

Review

“In the tech industry, they say that you learn more from a failure than from a hit. Well, if that's true, Losing the Signal will give you a post-doctoral education. Reading the inside story of the BlackBerry's helpless flameout is like watching any other train wreck: You're horrified, but you can't look away.” ―David Pogue, Author of POGUE'S BASICS and founder of Yahootech.com

“In LOSING THE SIGNAL, Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff tell the harrowing and riveting story of how we lost the connection to the Blackberry, a communication device so innovative and addictive that it was known, among aficionados, as a Crackberry. It's a tale of rivalries, jealousies and missed opportunities. You won't be able to put it down.” ―William Cohan, author of HOUSE OF CARDS: A Tale of Hubris and Wretched Excess on Wall Street and MONEY AND POWER: How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the World

For every winner...disruption brings a loser, and few lost bigger than the once-ubiquitous BlackBerry. The authors show how easily even the strongest brands can fail by underestimating their competitors. “Losing the Signal" is a good old-fashioned insider's business narrative, the kind we don't see enough of these days, and it should scare the pants off most CEOs." - The Wall Street Journal

“Losing the Signal tells of the marriage and divorce of Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, how two opposites built RIM into a world-beater and how they lost it. This is first-class reporting that reads like a juicy novel, with one amazing story after another. A terrific book.” ―Howard Green, author of Banking on America

“Losing the Signal is a riveting story of a company that toppled global giants before succumbing to the ruthlessly competitive forces of Silicon Valley… With unprecedented access to key players, senior executives, directors and competitors, Losing the Signal unveils the remarkable rise of a company that started above a bagel store in Ontario… Expertly told by acclaimed journalists, McNish and Silcoff, this is an entertaining, whirlwind narrative that goes behind the scenes to reveal one of the most compelling business stories of the new century.”
―Financial Times

“Unflinching” ―The Daily Beast

"The simple story is that BlackBerry was rendered irrelevant by the iPhone. But the story that the authors, Jacquie McNish and Sean Silcoff, tell in Losing the Signal ― our choice for the best book of 2015 on business narratives ― is more complicated." - Strategy and Business

“[McNish and Silcoff have] produced a tragedy worthy of Shakespeare's attention... So even as you read, with a kind of shiver of schadenfreude, about BlackBerry's vicissitudes, there's plenty of food for thought here about what this means on a much broader stage.” ―Yahoo! Finance

“In Losing the Signal, McNish and Silcoff authoritatively chronicle the missteps that abetted BlackBerry's fall... It's one helluva story.” ―Toronto Star

“LOSING THE SIGNAL [is] a saga of digital entrepreneurs who saw the future and made it happen... This fascinating story will hold your attention even though you know what's coming.” ―The Washington Post

An amazingly good story, well told
By Tech Historian
The rise and fall of RIM.
RIM rode technology disruption and created a company with $20 billion/year in revenue only to see it disappear by being disrupted themselves.

Lots of lessons here.
1) Even though the CEOs were reading the "Innovators Dilemma" they still had little perspective on how rapid disruption would happen to them. And even less of an understanding what to do about it. (The attempt to integrate the QNX software into existing products is a cautionary tale of technical debt, refactoring and plain bad engineering management.) The iPhone in 2007 should have been a wake-up call to both CEOs. Yet they both fell prey to the classic "disruption always looks like a toy to the incumbents" mistake.

2) The company grew past the management skills of the founders. The insular nature of the founders, the Canadian entrepreneurial ecosystem, founder hubris and a feckless board ended any potential of a positive intervention. It took a complete meltdown to get the board to act.

3) Mike Lazaridis, the technical CEO, fell prey to the "shiny object" syndrome. He discovered new technology (QNX) that he thought obsoleted the current software that drove the Blackberry handsets (Java). But instead of figuring out how to finesse the transition, he literally abandoned the existing development team (and revenue). A great example of how not to manage a technology transition.

3) Dealing with major platform disruption usually takes radical structural changes, not new product features. The story unfolds as a slow motion car crash as the CEOs waited, way, way too long to recognize, let alone deal with it. There's a reason that turnaround CEO's downsize companies and focus on what's important. If you're the founder it's almost impossible to get rid of your favorite projects.

Only quibble others have noted. The book barely mentions the changes Heins made, and almost nothing about Chens strategy.

A great business book.

RIM Insider LOVES this truly Shakesperian account of RIM
By Anna
I was sentimental after burning through "Losing the Signal" the newest installment on the rise and fall of BlackBerry. I will say it is the most accurate portrayal of the way things were at the company and despite lots of financial chops, it doesn't focus solely a-la-MBA-method on what was happening at the company and in the market.

Its nice to read an account that talks about the people, what they did and how they worked to take a company to the stratosphere. Its been too commonplace in recent years to be the butt jokes delivered by people that never aimed as high as many at RIM did every day. Armchair business quarter backs that never would have survived a week opine on how "stupid" everyone must have been to not see the writing on the walls. I'm proud and fortunate to have been part of the company. I hope that many people read this book and view the story as a human story of triumph and failure - but human always.

One of the best business books in recent memory
By J. Nguyen
This is a very well done book. Reading the title I was a little worried that it would just be the superficial take that most articles over the past few years have taken, but it actually is much more nuanced than that.

You can tell that the authors did a lot of research, and what you really have is the full story of how RIM was founded up until its current diminished state. I learned a lot about the company's history and about Lazaridis and Balsillie that I didn't know before. I actually have a lot more respect for them now, and I found myself wondering often "what the hell would I have done in this situation?"

This book is also well written with a good narrative, so it is very readable. It reminds me a little bit of Barbarians at the Gate. Didn't feel like a slog to get through, and it was compelling to really feel behind the scenes at the company when they were undergoing a difficult time.

The Last Coach
By G. Toffolo
I have read quite a few books on Paul "Bear" Bryant (including his audobiography) so I wasn't sure if the information in this book would be facts I already knew or information I was not aware of. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. Yes, there was all the well-known facts about his life, but to my surprise there was quite a bit of information that I was reading for the first time.

The author has done an outstanding job of detailed research and brings a clear steady style to the book. It is without question the most comprehensive book on Coach Bryant's life that I have ever read.

If you're an Alabama football fan, this is a must read.

The BEST Bryant Book
By G. Whiz
I've read many of the Bryant books and simply put, this is the best.

If you are a fan of college football then you'd do well to read this book from a historical standpoint. For those who think they know college football, this book is illuminating with regards to the "national" game in the early days vs. now (2007) and how championships were determined largely by geographics and not by talent or strength of schedule.

Excellent.

Great start to web application security testing
By Tim Crothers
Great start to web application security testing. Burp is one of the fundamental "best of breed' tools used in web application testing. This book does a very solid job of explaining how to configure an utilized Burp for performing security testing. Really the only component missing (and why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) is context. While the book does an excellent job of "how" it won't give you much of the "why" and "when" so you'll want to pair it with some broader web application security testing how-to's. But that is pretty minor in the scheme of things and easily accomplished via some web searching. So in the end this book is a great starting place if you intend to use Burp as part of your web application security testing.

*****

“Congratulations! You’re Have Been Selected...”

That’s the way the letter from the Dean of Admissions starts out when they send you that gorgeous fat envelope in the mail letting you know that your dream has come true -- they want you. I’ll never forget how my heart was pounding as I pulled that bulging cream-colored packet out of my mailbox and ripped it open. It was the culmination of years of focussed hard work and dedication to my vision of attending the world famous Wharton Business School.

I started preparing to go to Wharton when I was just 14 years old. Three and a half years later I had the GPA, SAT scores, Achievement Tests, AP Classes, Extracurriculars, Letters of Recommendation, and everything else it takes to claim a spot among the most elite students in the world.

Luckily for you my friend, with this book, I’m giving you instant admission to those hallowed halls -- and best of all, I’ll be there every step of the way as your personal tour guide, so you can cut out all the fluff, and focus only on the most important stuff.

Now you’re probably a bit skeptical. That's normal and healthy.

4 Reasons To Believe What I Say:

I’m an actual graduate of the Wharton Business School, and I earned my spot in the class of ’87 on my own. Nobody in my family had ever gone to an Ivy League university before, my dad’s name was not on any of the buildings, and I did not know anybody who had ever donated any money to the school.

I not only made it all the way through to graduate and get my sheep skin, but I was a top student at Wharton, earning a 4.0 GPA in my Entrepreneurial Management major.

After I graduated, my favorite and sharpest professor brought me on as his Teaching Associate for the MBA Business Planning class. When it came to handing out the marks, at 21 years of age, I was the one putting big red A’s B’s and C’s on the MBA business plans!

I’ve used the secrets you will learn in this book to succeed as an entrepreneur since 1999, and today I’m the President and sole owner of the Five Star Butter Co., a top supplier for many of America’s finest restaurants, hotels, and resorts. Wharton’s lessons and wisdom enable me to compete in thrive in today’s tough economy, and my sincere desire is to help you achieve your life dreams and business goals too.

One of Wharton’s biggest lessons was that it’s more than just about business. The great people and leaders who come out of Wharton live rich 3-dimensional lives. And I hope that I can help you do that too.

Awesome Read, Inspirational Business Book!
By Richard Kelley, M.D.
[[VIDEOID:mo3F39SJP66J0VF]]Review by Richard Kelley, M.D.
Clint Arthur's book, 'What They Teach You at the Wharton Business School' makes you think about, not only how you can create a great business life, but how you can create a great life that brings you a whole lot of happiness and satisfaction. Clint teaches you how to think about becoming and being a success in all areas of your life. As a business owner, he reminded me of an important concept, particularly in the midst of a recession; He says, "A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow." That phrase and the concept behind it is simple but has profound consequences if not acknowledged by a business owner, where one's cash-flow is concerned. This book is fun to read and reinforces the importance of believing in yourself and loving yourself enough to take the best care of yourself possible....something I advocate, as well. Not a hardcore business book, if that's what you're looking for, but a worthwhile book, written by a business-savvy, successful entrepreneur who has been around the block and has some lessons to pass on, that only experience can teach.

Getting IT Going, for Entrepreneurs and More
By Stephen Hobbs, EdD
Short, simple, to the point - ah, that is the recipe for a book geared towards entrepreneurs. In his own fun way, Clint has shared helpful insights for entrepreneurs. Nay to anyone involved in any kind of organization for we are all entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs when we truly get it! Enjoy the read ...

On the same TOP level as Napolean Hill and Anthony Robbins!
By Herb J. Leary
My five year old daughter and I were fortunate to sit next to and meet Clint on a flight last year. He is one of those rare people that understands how to get the most juice out of life! Read this book and you may get more out of it than you college education. Remember...the SMARTER (not harder) you work, the luckier you get. Clint looks for opportunities and makes opportunities happen and so can you. I highly suggest reading this book now.

**** THIS IS A COLLECTION FOR JAMES YOUNG'S USURPER'S WAR. IT CONTAINS ACTS OF WAR and COLLISIONS OF THE DAMNED***

"[A]uthor James Young shows himself to be a master of that science fiction sub-genre called 'Alternate History'."--Midwest Book Review

Adolf Hitler is dead. Great Britain lies prostrate, subdued under a storm of poison gas and incendiaries that have turned the great city of London into a blazing abattoir. The Royal Family's whereabouts are unknown, while Heinrich Himmler, new Fuhrer of the victorious Reich, prepares to dictate terms.

For RAF Squadron Leader Adam Haynes, London's destruction is the nightmare outcome of years spent fighting the specter of Fascism. With his own combatant status uncertain, Adam must rush to save as many of his Polish-speaking pilots as he can.

Great Britain's subjugation also has an immediate effect on Lieutenant (j.g.) Eric Cobb. Thrust unwillingly into combat between the Royal Navy and the Kriegsmarine, Eric must immediately make choices that not only affect himself, but will alter the course of history.

In the Pacific, Rear Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi witnesses firsthand the myriad opportunities that Germany's victory has provided for Japan. Defeated in China by Soviet forces after the Imperial Army foolishly attached northwards in December 1941, Japan has not only changed governments to a Navy dominated cabinet, but also changed strategies. It is to the south, in the oil rich Dutch East Indies, that Nippon will find her destiny. Yamaguchi, as the new head of the Kido Butai, must develop a plan that prevents American interference while simultaneously husbanding the Imperial Japanese Navy's strength for a single, great Decisive Battle.

Excellent alternate history
By Amazon Customer
Excellent alternate history. Good premise, well developed. Combat scenes well done. Young's grasp of technical issues, operations/logistics, and weapons systems of the time is truly impressive; and it's very clearly and interestingly explained.

Sustained, compelling narrative. A good story that carries you along. Highly recommended.

Speed-read through the obligatory "Family and Human Interest" scenes (unfortunately, that includes the first few pages - keep going, it gets much better); their essence is accurate, but the scenes are labored.

The dialogue tends to the leaden, but it's not too bad.

Looking forward to next volume!

I try to finish whatever novel I have; I just couldn't get passed 17 percent of this one. Great premise, but bogged down in sophomoric characters. Kept waiting, in vain, for it to get better.

Un reflejo real
By Macarena RP

... which is a course I elected to take to satisfy a college level general education requirement
By Jessica Steiner
This book was assigned for my psychology of diversity class which is a course I elected to take to satisfy a college level general education requirement. I felt that the studies referenced seemed to be biased, and some seemed downright bogus. Just to clarify - I did not do further research on the studies I doubted, I just read the book and took the class.

An example of something that I thought was bogus though was in the section on prejudice against obese individuals. The author defended obese/overweight people and said that some people are unable to lose weight after a certain point, or lose any weight at all. The author also gave a figure between 30-50% (sorry, I can't remember exactly but I know it was pretty high) for the number of diets that do not work because after the diet people tend to gain the weight right back. I though that it was common knowledge that in order to lose weight it takes a lifestyle change; diet and exercise should not be temporary if you want permanent results. The author seemed to feel otherwise.

good introductory text
By N.R. Truman
although those two other reviewers scream about the dated references, he also uses a lot of updated references to support his thoughts. as a person of color, i did feel like the book was geared more towards a white audience and because i know the literature i know he makes some obscure and incomplete references, but the general points and conclusions are spot on in terms of where the literature currently stands. not sure why these other reviewers are so biased.

A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to fix our broken system of justice—from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time

Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, a moving window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.

Praise for Just Mercy

“Every bit as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird, and in some ways more so . . . a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields.”—David Cole, The New York Review of Books

“Searing, moving . . . Bryan Stevenson may, indeed, be America’s Mandela.”—Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times

“You don’t have to read too long to start cheering for this man. . . . The message of this book . . . is that evil can be overcome, a difference can be made. Just Mercy will make you upset and it will make you hopeful.”—Ted Conover, The New York Times Book Review

“Inspiring . . . a work of style, substance and clarity . . . Stevenson is not only a great lawyer, he’s also a gifted writer and storyteller.”—The Washington Post

“As deeply moving, poignant and powerful a book as has been, and maybe ever can be, written about the death penalty.”—The Financial Times

“Brilliant.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

“Not since Atticus Finch has a fearless and committed lawyer made such a difference in the American South. Though larger than life, Atticus exists only in fiction. Bryan Stevenson, however, is very much alive and doing God’s work fighting for the poor, the oppressed, the voiceless, the vulnerable, the outcast, and those with no hope. Just Mercy is his inspiring and powerful story.”—John Grisham

“Bryan Stevenson is one of my personal heroes, perhaps the most inspiring and influential crusader for justice alive today, and Just Mercy is extraordinary. The stories told within these pages hold the potential to transform what we think we mean when we talk about justice.”—Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow

  • A call to fix our broken system of justice-from one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time

From School Library Journal
What is the one commonality of people on death row? If the victim is white, the perpetrator is 11 times more likely to be condemned to die than if the victim is black. When Stevenson was a 23-year-old Harvard law student, he started an internship in Georgia where his first assignment was to deliver a message to a man living on death row. This assignment became his calling: representing the innocent, the inadequately defended, the children, the domestic abuse survivors, the mentally ill—the imprisoned. This fast-paced book reads like a John Grisham novel. One of those profiled, Walter, was at a barbecue with over 100 people at the time of the murder he was accused of, and spent more than six years on death row. The stories include those of children, teens, and adults who have been in the system since they were teens. This is a title for the many young adults who have a parent or loved one in the prison system and the many others who are interested in social justice, the law, and the death penalty. A standout choice.—Amy Cheney, Alameda County Library, Juvenile Hall, CA

Review
“Just Mercy is every bit as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird, and in some ways more so. . . . [It] demonstrates, as powerfully as any book on criminal justice that I’ve ever read, the extent to which brutality, unfairness, and racial bias continue to infect criminal law in the United States. But at the same time that [Bryan] Stevenson tells an utterly damning story of deep-seated and widespread injustice, he also recounts instances of human compassion, understanding, mercy, and justice that offer hope. . . . Just Mercy is a remarkable amalgam, at once a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields.”—David Cole, The New York Review of Books

“A searing, moving and infuriating memoir . . . Bryan Stevenson may, indeed, be America’s Mandela. For decades he has fought judges, prosecutors and police on behalf of those who are impoverished, black or both. . . . Injustice is easy not to notice when it affects people different from ourselves; that helps explain the obliviousness of our own generation to inequity today. We need to wake up. And that is why we need a Mandela in this country.”—Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times

“Unfairness in the justice system is a major theme of our age. . . . This book brings new life to the story by placing it in two affecting contexts: [Bryan] Stevenson’s life work and the deep strain of racial injustice in American life. . . . You don’t have to read too long to start cheering for this man. Against tremendous odds, Stevenson has worked to free scores of people from wrongful or excessive punishment, arguing five times before the Supreme Court. . . . The book extols not his nobility but that of the cause, and reads like a call to action for all that remains to be done. . . . The message of the book, hammered home by dramatic examples of one man’s refusal to sit quietly and countenance horror, is that evil can be overcome, a difference can be made. Just Mercy will make you upset and it will make you hopeful. . . . Stevenson has been angry about [the criminal justice system] for years, and we are all the better for it.”—Ted Conover, The New York Times Book Review

“From the frontlines of social justice comes one of the most urgent voices of our era. Bryan Stevenson is a real-life, modern-day Atticus Finch who, through his work in redeeming innocent people condemned to death, has sought to redeem the country itself. This is a book of great power and courage. It is inspiring and suspenseful—a revelation.”—Isabel Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Other Suns

“Bryan Stevenson is America’s young Nelson Mandela, a brilliant lawyer fighting with courage and conviction to guarantee justice for all. Just Mercy should be read by people of conscience in every civilized country in the world to discover what happens when revenge and retribution replace justice and mercy. It is as gripping to read as any legal thriller, and what hangs in the balance is nothing less than the soul of a great nation.”—Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

Historical, Sociological and Spiritual Tour de Force
By g3 from the UP
I have a new hero . . . Bryan Stevenson. He joins my other hero lawyer, Morris Dees, in my personal pantheon of those who fight for social justice.

Bryan Stevenson is the self-effacing author of this terrific book about the legal war he has waged against cruel, unjust sentencing practices in this country for over three decades now. His history of founding and working for the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, is told through real case histories of real people who were subjected to degradation and inhumane treatment that will shock you, anger you, and bring you to tears.

I spent a 25+ year career as a federal prosecutor, in the rarefied world of the federal courts, and am ashamed to say that I had no idea that such horrendous things were happening simultaneously in the state courts of our country. How Stevenson managed to stay on task for decades, to spend so much time simply connecting with his clients as human beings, and to accomplish such extraordinary results is amazing. I learned a lot, and the teachings of The New Jim Crow, by Michelle Alexander [another excellent book on the prison industrial complex in this country] were reinforced.

Perhaps my favorite chapter, for what it said about humanity, is entitled Mitigation. I will be using the facts from that chapter in a future talk at my Unitarian Universalist church. "Each of us is more than the worst thing we have ever done." This phrase echoes throughout this work, which, while fact filled, also has a strong spiritual component to it.

This is a great book. Please read it, and do as I did upon completion. Find the Equal Justice Initiative and give them some financial support. They work on a shoestring, and take care of some of the most helpless and needy among us.

Powerful, important book -- does the American justice system fail the disenfranchised?
By Kathy Cunningham
At its core, Bryan Stevenson's JUST MERCY is about the inherent inhumanity of the American justice system. As Stevenson puts it, "Presumptions of guilt, poverty, racial bias, and a host of other social, structural, and political dynamics have created a system that is defined by error, a system in which thousands of innocent people now suffer in prison." This is a system that condemns children to life imprisonment without parole, that makes petty theft a crime as serious as murder, and that has declared war on hundreds of thousands of people with substance abuse problems by imprisoning them and denying them help. Stevenson is an attorney with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, an organization that offers free legal services to the poor and disenfranchised. His book is a sobering look at criminal justice from the perspective of those least likely to be treated fairly.

JUST MERCY explores a number of devastating cases, including children as young as fourteen facing life imprisonment, and scores of people on death row - mostly poor, and mostly black - who have been unfairly convicted. But the central focus is on Walter McMillan, a black man sentenced to death for the murder of a prominent young white woman. McMillan claimed he did not commit this crime, and he had a score of alibi witnesses, but he was quickly railroaded into both a conviction and a death sentence. Stevenson spent years working to get McMillan a new trial, and the two men remained connected throughout the remainder of McMillan's life. It's a fascinating case, one that involves perjury, police corruption, a racist judge, and prosecutors more intent on protecting their political positions than finding justice.

Stevenson's thesis is that justice itself is denied for the millions of Americans who are poor, non-white, mentally ill, or otherwise disenfranchised. Ours is no longer a country that sees compassion as a virtue; instead, we write harsher and harsher laws that demand longer and longer sentences for those we consider undesirables. "The true measure of our character," Stevenson writes, "is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned." And by the final page of JUST MERCY, it is quite clear that we, as Americans, have fallen short.

It's rare these days to meet someone who truly dedicates himself to those least able to help themselves, especially someone who isn't after media attention or self-promotion. Stevenson's tireless efforts to give solace to the many men and women on death row are both inspirational and affirming. He isn't successful in freeing all of his clients - more than a few are executed in spite of his pleas - but what he offers them is more than just legal support. He listens to them, takes them seriously, investigates in ways the police failed to do, and gives them a voice they had otherwise been denied. In the end, Stevenson writes, "we have to reform a system of criminal justice that continues to treat people better if they are rich and guilty than if they are poor and innocent." That's a tough lesson for a world too often motivated by money, power, and political position. The people Bryan Stevenson works for have no money, no power, and no political position, but they are human beings deserving of compassion and mercy. "Each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done," Stevenson writes, adding, "the opposite of poverty is not wealth; the opposite of poverty is justice." As Americans, we can't be proud of our justice system until it offers justice to all of our people, and not only those with money and influence. It's a hard sell in today's mercenary, "me first" environment. But Stevenson's voice is one we all need to hear. JUST MERCY is a powerful and eye-opening book. I recommend it highly.

A Shattering Experience.
By Lita Perna
The author, Bryan A. Stevenson is the founder and executive director of the Montgomery Alabama Equal Justice Initiative which was formed initially to provide free, quality legal services to condemned men and women on death row in Alabama and to challenge the injustice of the criminal justice system against poor people and people of color.

He has represented those on death row, mentally disabled people whose illnesses have landed them in prison for decades, and abused and neglected and emotionally ill and cognitively impaired children who have been prosecuted as adults and imprisoned in adult prisons and suffered horrible sexual and physical abuse.

Bryan Stevenson is a hero to the many whose lives he has saved.

Stevenson states in the introduction to the book that he's writing about, "...Getting closer to mass incarceration and extreme punishment in America....how easily we condemn people...the injustice we create when we allow fear, anger and distance shape the way we treat the most vulnerable among us."

* America has the highest rate of incarceration in the world. The U.S. is the only country that condemned children (currently 2,500) to life imprisonment without parole. Race is the greatest predictor of who gets the death penalty in the U.S. There are many instances of bad lawyers, later disbarred who inadequately defend indigent clients.

Just Mercy's focus is on the author's tireless, almost Herculean efforts and constant struggles to get those who've been unjustly accused off death row and also to advocate for children as young as 13 years who've been sentenced to life without parole.

The book's main character is a man who has been framed and is scheduled to be executed. We are introduced to him as he sits on death row before he's even been convicted. We follow him throughout the book as the author struggles to save his life.

Many of the stories are Kafkaesque: A woman lies to police and says she's pregnant to avoid doing jail time and is later accused of killing her (nonexistent) infant. She faces capitol murder charges and a potential death sentence so she makes a deal and accepts a 20 year prison sentence.

Most of the stories are horrifying like something from a Russian Gulag: A homeless sexually abused and battered 14 year old girl accidentally sets a fire and kills two and though she is found to lack intent, she is sentenced to life in prison ...where she is raped by a guard...and becomes pregnant. As of 2014 she's been in prison for 38 years.

A 13 year old with mental disabilities and who reads at a first grade level is charged with sexual battery in addition to a burglary he committed with two older boys; one who committed a prior sex crime. The boy maintains his innocence. The state refuses to present DNA evidence, then destroys it. The boy isn't even identified by the victim. He is sentenced to life without parole...and is repeatedly raped ...and attempts suicide many times.

A thirteen year old shot a woman. He and two other boys are charged with armed robbery and attempted homicide. The boy's lawyer tells him to plead guilty and tells the boy he'd be sentenced to 15 years in prison. The judge accepts the boy's plea and sentences him to life without parole. To protect the boy from sexual assault the staff at the prison puts the 13 year old in solitary confinement. He spends 18 years in solitary confinement, not seeing another inmate or being able to touch another person, getting his meals through a slot, and living in a space the size of a closet. He becomes a `cutter' and slashes his wrists arms. He attempts suicide several times.

This book reads like one horror story after another.

Stevenson writes, "The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated and the condemned."

Bryan Stevenson more than measures up.

In June 1012 the author won a constitutional ban on life without parole sentences imposed on children convicted of homicides.
He continues to fight. He continues to win though for too many, the battle has been lost.

This book is a shattering experience.
