About the Author
Nigel Bennett was one of Britain's most successful racing car designers of the 80s and 90s. His Indycars won 79 races, five National Drivers Championships, five Constructers Championships and five Indy 500 wins.He raced his home-built 750F car, and was Development Manager for the Firestone Racing Division, working with Team Lotus, Ferrari, BRM, Hesketh, Porsche and JW Automotive.He worked at Hesketh Racing before moving on to Team Lotus, and was engineer to Mario Andretti and Ronnie Peterson, becoming Chief Engineer to Colin Chapman. Designer of the Ensign F1 and Theodore Indy cars, Nigel was head-hunted by Lola Cars, later becoming Penske Cars' Chief Designer, a position he held for eight years.

Well Done

This book provides an remarkable perspective of Formula 1 and Indy Car racing from 1966 through 2003. The author began his career with Firestone and went on to work with Hesketh, Lotus, Ensign, Lola, Penske, and G Force. He worked with many of the most accomplished manufacturers, engineers, drivers, team managers, and team owners in racing during that period.
The author designed the Penske Indy race cars, PC 17 through PC 26, from 1988 through 1997. While the time he spent with Penske is the core of the book, his work before and after is also covered.
The author is very evenhanded. He gives full credit and blame to himself and his teammates for the successes and failures of the teams he worked with. A strength of the book is that the section covering his years with Penske are broken up with chapters on other topics like the duties of a racetrack engineer and inside commentaries on the activities of competitors from people working with those competitors. Ten chapters on the ups and downs of one team could have gotten repetitious.

Good Read for the Hard Core Racing Fan

As a former Formula Ford racer and one who had designed, built and driven one's own racing cars, Nigel Bennett's book is a great book on the inside technical side of open wheel racing at the top levels from the late 1960's to early 2000's when racing became mostly spec car. He covers the Firestone tire years, Chapman Lotus years, Indy Lola years and lastly the Penske years. This was period of final development of the mid engine Indy and F1 car. Open racing cars today are mostly high refinements of the basic concepts of the 1960's concepts. Also finally the real story of how Penske Racing missed the 1995 Indy 500...chassis problems, spooked drivers (Emerson and Little Al), etc. Put it up there with Smokey Yunick's books, the bible of the inside of racing along with Andrew Ferguson's Team Lotus the Indy years.
Yet in all of these books the current designing superstar Adrian Newey's book when he writes it will be required reading.

A Very Good Read!

Reading this book reminded me a lot of John Wyer's book, The Certain Sound. It had a very nice blend of stories about personalities, some nice technical information and behind the scenes stories. I always rate a book by what new informaiton I learned and this book is high on my list. A very good read. I finished the book in two days and am looking forward to rereading it.
