A guide to healthy eating & weight loss...Follow this book's guide & you WILL LOSE that weight!

I read an article in a popular women's magazine which is how I learned of this book, "Your Inner Skinny". I ordered the book from Amazon.com and I am so THRILLED I did. I had 75 pounds to lose, none of my clothes fit anymore and I was tired of wearing jeans & the same frumpy sweaters over & over because I couldn't afford to buy new clothes...I have 3 small children to provide for. I decided it was time to do something about it. When I started reading this book it became clear this was not a fad diet or weight loss "gimmick". It is well written and Joy Bauer is a nutritionist. I used the book as a guide to help me change the wrong eating habits I had acquired over the years after giving birth to my oldest daughter (age 6 now) such as "wasting" calories on foods such as chips, etc., which have no nutritional value and I quit finishing the food my children left on their plates....it may not have been going in the trash, but it sure had been going to my waist & hips! I ate MORE food than I ever had and I was never hungry. I ate 5 to 6 times a day. I learned portion control and also how to balance lean proteins, veggies/fruits, and carbohydrates. I even switched my kids to whole wheat bread with no effort...they never even noticed the change. I lost 75 pounds in a year using this book to guide my food choices and a daily excercise regime which consisted of 30 minutes of brisk walking (about 2 miles a day) or an excercise DVD if weather did not permit walking. I went from a size 20/22 down to a size 8 and I never felt better. That was 2 years ago. I got pregnant with my 3rd child this year and gained 30 pounds during the pregnancy and now I'm back on Joy's eating plan and I've lost 7 pounds even through the Christmas holidays. I have 23 more to go. What's the best part is, that unlike fad diets I've been on in the past in which I lost large amounts of weight only to regain it plus some extra pounds a few months down the road, I did not regain all the 75 pounds I lost 2 yrs ago and only gained the 30 pounds of pregnancy weight. This book will not help you lose the weight if you don't read it and make the effort to correct your bad eating habits. It is not a magic "fix". You have to be determined to stick to a lifestyle change in your eating habits and excercise habits. I read a 2 star review that said the book was "unreasonable". That is the farthest thing from the truth. You will not lose 10 or 15 pounds a month though. If you eat according to the book's guidelines & excercise you can count on a 3 to 4 pound a month weight loss with a plateau here & there but the book even tells you how to change up your eating to get past the plateau. If you find yourself starving, then you are doing something wrong. You didn't gain the weight overnight so you're not going to lose it overnight. If you're dedicated to losing the weight for your own health and wellbeing then buy this book, follow Joy's tips for healthy eating habits & exercise regularly, and you will be amazed at how your body transforms. After sticking to Joy's plan and losing that 75 pounds I actually ENJOYED looking in the mirror again! Now I'm back on Joy's plan to lose the last 23 pounds of my pregnancy weight and I can't wait to get into my size 8 jeans again!! And I'm 41 years old! I hope this review helped others and I hope you lose those unwanted pounds so you can get the energy back to REALLY ENJOY life again! Just remember, it takes determination and effort and willpower on your part, the book won't help you lose weight if it just gathers dust on a shelf & is never read. Best wishes to all!! Oh, and I just wanted to add that you don't have to follow the recipes Joy has in the book if you don't want to. You can follow the eating plan just as well by consuming the veggies she reccomends and the lean proteins from the list. I did not use the recipes or do any "fancy" cooking...I just kept a diet of primarily baked/grilled chicken, lots of steamed veggies, and the correct amount of carbs. I followed the food guide lists which she provides. So don't think you have to spend outrageous amounts of money on groceries to be able to follow Joy's eating guidelines. It's primarily the same foods you feed your family anyway, just minus the high fat/high calorie sauces, butter, gravies, etc. Good luck to everyone in their weight loss efforts. I am proof it can be done!

Lost 12lbs. in one week

I debated between giving this 5 or 4 stars. I chose 5 because the diet does work. Why then the debate? Because it was very difficult for me personally. I stuck to the diet but that first week you cut out all sugar and salt cold turkey. It makes it hard and made me feel very restricted. But after losing 12lbs. that first week I can see why she does it. The menus are pretty good and I did stay "full" most of the time. You will have the most success if you stick to her meal plans. The foods are easy to prepare and enjoyable. My family's favorite (yes I made them eat what I eat at dinner) was the Sizzil'n Beef Fajitas. My favorite lunch was the Cheese and tomato sandwich. The no soda during the first week was also hard but after the first week you can add it back in (I didn't surprisingly enough). The exercise requirement is also very easy to follow but you are required to exercise 7 days a week. I also like how this diet is really all about wholesome eating. It isn't about buying certain products put out by her. You basically eat vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and lean proteins. Its that simple. I am continuing on my weight loss journey with her book and I am currently in the second half of week two. In this phase she has stepped up her exercise requirements some but they are still at a level I am comfortable with. She also allows for a healthy "extra" in addition to your daily snack. You also are allowed to eat no-calorie sugar twice a day (diet soda counts as one of these). The meals continue to be delicious and I continue to have success albeit at a slower rate of weight loss. I don't believe this is to be considered a miracle diet but a lifestyle changing diet. You basically relearn how to eat healthy and enjoy wholesome foods. I think that is what is so attractive about this diet, it is meant for life long success. I would recommend this over the south beach diet or any other type of diet out there for realistic and long term success.

Love this book, it works!

I lost 40 pounds (and kept it off) on Joy's LIFE Diet. This is her paperback version and it's a steal at this price. Her diet is totally effective, reasonable and EASY to follow. It's also filled with simple and delicious recipes. I highly recommend this book if you want to lose weight.
