An excellent overview on confession, spiritual direction and spirituality

I am a student of Dr. Kidder's. Her lectures are just as interesting and concisely prepared as you will find in this wonderful book. In addition to giving a comprehensive overview of the tradition of penitence and reconciliation, she deftly includes fascinating information about lay spiritual women in the 12-13th Century Lowlands who heard confessions and served as spiritual directors for many people, some of whom were men religious. Admittedly, I love to read history of any kind, but the flow of this book makes it even easier to read it. History is more than memorizing dates and doctrines. Kidder makes it come alive.
As an Episcopalian, we have the option of making corporate or individual confession, and I have never done the latter. However, after reading Kidder's tome and some of her sources, I have decided to make a retreat and my first full (covering my lifetime) confession. Scary? Yes, but she makes such compelling arguments that I am willing to give it a try.
I encourage you to give the book a try. Who knows what you'll be moved to do as a result!
